' , <br /> <br /> Minutes of re~alar meeting held January l~th, were read and approved. <br /> <br /> The Committee appointed to present re~olutione of respect for ~rs. Cora S. Dar- <br />den, made the following report, which was, on motion of Mr. Stewart, adopted: <br /> <br /> "WHEREAS, Providence has called from among us, Mrs. Cora S. Darden, for many <br />years a faithful member, of ~he School Board of Portsmouth, ~nd <br /> WHEREAS, the passing of Mrs. Darden has deprived the community of a loyal and <br />unselfish friend, and one whose entire life ~has been devoted to better education and the up- <br />building of her City, - <br /> NOW THEB~FORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, that <br />we sincerely regret and deplore the demise of ~rs. Darden, whose high place in our educational <br />life will be diffic~ ~o fill and whose wise counseI and influence will be felt by many for <br />years to come. <br /> BE IT FURTHER P~SOLVED, that these resolutions be spread upon the records of <br />the Council of the City of Portsmouth and that a copy be sent ~he bereaved family. <br /> <br /> Respectf,~ly, <br /> <br /> Leslie T. Misenheimer h~ been <br />employed to supervise the hot house and its gro~ds, with general, suoervision and direction <br />~f all work, in connection therewith, and under the Superintendent o~ Pa~ks and Cemeteries. <br /> This arrangement I believe, will prove satisfactory, and certainly is <br />in the interest of economy., ' <br /> <br />On motion owdered filed. <br /> <br /> P_nd "A W.P.A. B.M. Schwetz <br />fo~ a refund' oh taxes paid for 1935 on proper~y 120~-6 Queen S~reet. I find that a permit was <br />issued for the wrecking of this building in November, 193k - #6633° <br /> The Commissioner of Revenue tells me that the building was torn down-and shou~ <br />not have been on the Land Book for 1935. It is assessed for $300.00 and the sum of $7.95 <br />should be refunded to Mr. Schwetz., - <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Cast to concur In the A~torney~s recommendation, was adopted. <br /> <br /> - uNFINISHED BUSINESS <br />The following ordinance, laid on table January lkth, was taken up and read: <br /> <br /> "AN ORDINANCE INd:OSING AND COLLECTING TAXES ON REAL ESTATE~ <br />TANGIBLE PERSONAL PROPERTY AND MACHINERY, WITHIN THE LIMITS OF THE <br />CITY OF PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, FOR THE PURPOSE OF RAISING REVENUE <br />FOR THE SUPPORT OF THE GOVERNEENT A~ PUBLIC FREE $OHOOLS~ AND THE <br />PUBLIC DEBT FOR THE YEAR BEGINNING JANUARY let, 1936." <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Fey, said ordinance was adopted, and by ~he following vote: <br /> <br /> Ayes: Brooks, Fox, Han~ey,'Oast, Stewart <br /> aye.
