~ortl 28th. ~q'~g.

Ame~ican~War. The City of Portsmouth furnished two companies of militia, ~oproximate!y two
hundred boys ~volunteers" born and raised in our City.
These boys served their country, their sta~e and their City, for the duration
of ~he Ws~r.
~hen the war was cver,~ they returned to~l~ortsm~uth and mustered out of the ser-
vice with honor to Shemselves and credit to their City. ~or many years thereafter, they con
tinued ~o be numbered among our lo~al citizens.
~And whereas, a~ the presen~ time there is not more t_han fifteen living in the
City ~oday, this Camp views with saddened he~rts the unfortunate fact that there is not one
single memoris~ or shrine in any cemetery controlled by the City of Portsmouth, eo~memoratinE
these lo~al p~triots. ~

Be it therefore resolved - That this Camp immediately establish an endowment
or sinking fund and seek volunteer donations from i~s members and patriotic citizens with the
hope that in the near future, we could erect a s-uitable monument in Olive Branch Cemetery.
Resolved further, that we petition ~h~ City Council to donate a olat in the
above-named cemetery sufficiently large to accommodate a suitable monument and the remaining
members of the Portsmouth Volunteers. Approximately two full lots would be required.

Respectfully submitted,

W.H. Tonkin, Adjutant,
Geo. E.
