<br />lines of the Lane can be ascertained. Your petitioner is anxious to have the lines of the
<br />Lane-established so that the west line-of his lot canbe established, he therefore, respect-
<br />fully-requests the Council ~o have the lines of the Lane establ~hed according ~o the land -
<br />marks thereon and the several conveyances made by Colonel William Crawford and others, con -
<br />corning said Lane.

<br /> The following letZer from the Superintendent of SCHools was read:

<br /> "The School Board, aZ its meeting on Friday night, December kth, passed a res-
<br />olution requesting the City ~Council, to-approprlaZe as speedily as possible, $16,300.00 from
<br />which the Board could draw to purchase the land for the site for the new colored scPmol build-
<br />ing, and for other necessary expenses. The purchase ~f any portion of this site can noZ be
<br />compleZed until the money is actually paid. The site selected is encumbered with a large
<br />brick building, which must be removed before the building can be begun. The removal of this
<br />building should require several weeks, and its removal, in the oPinion of the Board, should
<br />be begun on December l~th. The Board is, therefore, especially desirous of having $6,000. of
<br />~His amount made available by the end of this week, so as to enter upon the possession of this
<br />property and begin the removal of the building.

<br /> "0n behalf of the Portsmouth Teachers Association, we present the following
<br />petition for the restoration of our 6% salary cut which was made by the City in 1932.
<br /> First, because of the high cost of living, including food, clothing, rent,
<br />fuel and insurance.
<br /> Second, because of the following demands, made upon the teachers: memberships
<br />in national, state and local associations; educational tours and educational' advancement, !n-
<br />eluding summer school attendance, extension courses and subscriptions to educational litera
<br />tuts.
<br /> Third, because of our profession, we are expected ~o take the head in conZrib-
<br />uting to and supporting charitable institutions and community projects.
<br /> In consideration of these facts, we sincerely hope that our peZition will be
<br />favorably considered by you.

<br />was opened to the public, to participate in the discussion of the 1937 budget.

<br /> Miss Louise Mays and Mr. D.G. McGavock spoke in favor of the' restoration of the
<br />6% cut in ~he teachers~ salaries. Mr. Curtis Hand, Mr. S.H. Hall ~d Mr. H.S. Har~ spoke in
<br />favor of ~he pet.i~iOn of ~he firemen, in reference ~o increase In pay, ~d better working con-
