~This organization regrets greatly the cause that led to the resignation of
Dr. Roper, our Health Department Head. The women of Portsmouth, under the Housewives~ Leag~.e,
worked hard to make possible our present Health Department. As you may know, we had neither
milk nor meat inspection here previiously.
At a League meeting, this afternoon, it was decided to communicate to you our
wishes regarding the future Health Department, under Dr. Denny. As a Veterinarian is neces-
sary for meat inspection and meat inspection is necessary to the health of our homes, and
since Dr. Krause has been trained for fift'een years, under Dr. Roper, for this work, we would
like to see him reinstated and the entire Department kept to its present efficient status.
Few not league members realize how well our City has been oared for under Dr. Roper, but the
women of Portsmouth will never again be satisfied with less.
We always stood behind Dr. Roper and we often worked with him and are prepared
to extend our hearty co-operation ~o Dr. DeP~y. We know his place will not be easy since a high
standard of efficiency has been
Enclosed you wit! find a letter from one of the numerous merchants who think
as we do.
Wishing you success in your new regime and extending to you our co-operation
for all benefits tc Portsmouth, I am,

Yours tru3 y,
Administrat ion,

Th~ following letter was read, ~nd on motion Ordered filed:
~$tatement Oon~ern~Meat Insoection Service

W-ithout wishing to criticise any changes deemed necessary by our City
and with the friendliest feelings toward all parties concerned, we feel con-
strained to express our viewpoint not only for the services rendered by cum Health Deoartment
to our particular business, but to the ~ity, as a whole. - '
We feel that the administration is not fully aware of the extent of ser-
vice rendered in recent years by our Health Department, and the necessity for at least two
trained men to render the various services required for the protection of the inhabitants of
a modern city.
The service whiin most vitally affects our particular business is that
of meat inspection. In order to comply with our City ordinance that all carcasses offered
for sale in the City must be inspected it is necessary that this inspection be under the di-
rection of a qualified veterinarian. In the past several years, Portsmouth has been guarded
much more efficiently than is gene~a~!y known or realized, except bY those of us who have come
into contact with the fair but ~nwavering attitude of Dr. Krause, that meat products offered
for sale in our City must be wholesome. ~
In addition to rigid inspection service, much effort has been given to the
educating of the retailers to handle food-products in a sanitary manner. It is particularly
gratifying to us to observe how much progress has been made in the cleaning up of the meat de-
partments in the smaller stores throughout our City. This work has only been possible thru the
constant efforts of Dr. Krause and his capable assistant, Mr. Alexander, and while the orders
of the Department were carried out in some quarters principally through fear of the inspection,
recently we have noticed more pride on the pa~'t of the retailers in equipment and cleanliness.
We feel that efficiency in such an important department is entitled to con-
sideration along with the necessity of eoonomy, ~and we sincerely feel Portsmouth needs the ser-
vices of an efficient and fully qualified veterinarian together with a capable assistant to
guard our City in the many phases that come under the head of that department.
We sincerely trust that arrangements c~u be made for that need, and that
we will not make a step backward by the curtailment of this service.
Respectfully submitted~
