February 9th, 1937. - NEW BUSINESS - The following letter was read: "The dndersigned, the Eight~ Wards Civic ~_ub of ~he City of Portsmouth, Va., hereby'respectfully petitions you ~o grant us permission to hold a charity circus on the ~ythe St. playgrounds, beginning April 19th, 1937, and continuing for a period of six days thereafter. · This circus is ~o be held for the purpose of raising funds for the Charity Fund of the Eighth Wards Civic Club, which fund is to be used for relief and charitable pur- poses in the City of Portsmouth. We would expect ~o pay the license tax required, and comply with all city or- dinances. Yours very respectfully, The Eight Wards Civic Club, By Earl Stublen, President., Motion of ~lr. Warren to lay on l~ble until next meeting, was adopted. The Compensation report for January, for ~he Treasurer, Commissioner of Rev- Commonwealth Attorney, was received, and on motion of Mr. Hutchins, approved for pay - enue, merit. The City Manager s~ated that he had numerous complaints of the schedules and operation of buses in the City and asked that a committee of three be appointed to investi gate same and report back to the Oouncil. Motion to appoint said commitZee was adopted, and the Chair appointed Messrs. Fox, Wilson an~ Grimes on said committee. On motion of Mr. Wilson, the privilege of the floor was granted a repreeen - ratine of the Memorial Day Committee. Mr. Higgins asked that the Council aooroorlate $50.00 toward the e_xpense of said committee. '- - adopted. Motion of Mr. Fox to make an appropriation of $50.00 fo~ said purpose, was On motion adjourned. Clerk.
