March 23rd, 1937 <br /> <br /> whereas ~his City is now served by the lines of the Peninsula <br />Transit Corpn., in active competition with the Richmond Greyhound Lines,- <br />!nc., <br /> THEREFOHE BE IT.RESOLVED that this 0ouncil, as the represe~tives <br />of the people of Portsmouth, hereby declares its opposition to the mono- <br />poly which would be created by the approval of the application of the <br />Richmond Greyhound Lines, Inc., to acquire control of the Peninsula Tran~ <br />sitCorpn, <br /> BE IT FURTB~RRESOLVED that in the opinion of this Council such a <br />monopoly would be injurious to the welfare of the people of this City and <br />of all the cities and co~lties of the H~mpton ROads area; and that it is <br />conducive to the public interest that the Peninsula Transit Corpn~ remain <br />a competitor of the RicP~gnd Greyhound Lines, Inc., and its~allied eom - <br />panics between the Virginza seaboard and the territory northward and west- <br />ward thereof. <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be transmit <br /> ted to the Interstate Commerce Commission. <br /> <br />Attest: <br /> <br />Chairman. <br /> <br />-- Secretary.~ <br /> <br />On motion of Mr. Weiseman, the said resolution was not adopted. <br /> <br />Order of Business resumed - <br /> <br />The following communications from the City Manager were read: <br /> <br /> 1st - On ~ebrua~ 18th 193o, Portsmouth ~ade apotication to the Federal <br />Government, through the District Engineer ~n Norfolk, to reconstruct the bridge over Bain s <br />Creek, leading to the City Park, ~nd close the draw~ <br /> I have Just received a letter from Major H.R~ Cole, District Engineer, <br />inclosing a document signed by the Secretary of War, granting the City's request. Th~ docu- <br />ment states that the work must be started within one year, and finished within three years, <br />and that the work must be done under the supervision of theDistrict Engineer~ <br /> Mr. Davis and Mr~ Barclay followed this matter up and finally succeed~ <br />ed. Hartung, substitute <br />fireman, for lost time, account of personal injury, was referred to me. <br /> I recommend that we ~pay him $50.00, and $5.00 doctor's bill; $25°00 of <br />which has already been advanced to.him.~ <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Warren to concur in the Mauager~s recommendation, and to appro- <br />prlate $5~.00 for said purpose, was adopted~ <br /> <br />5~h - ~On recommendation of the Chief of the Fire Department, I have promoted <br />Mr. Stanle~ H. Hall from Engines,'to Captain, in the ~ire~Department, sub,-eot to confirmation <br />by the Civil Service Co~missio~.,~ ' <br /> <br />On motion ordered filed. <br /> <br /> 6th - "Mr. J.D~ MeLaughlin h~s become physically incapacitated to render fur~ <br />ther service as a fireman. He has been in the service ~neteen years. <br /> I recommend.that he be retired, the amount of his retirement pay to be <br />fixed by the Council~~ <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr~ Weiseman~to concur ~n the Manager's recommendation and that an <br />~oprOpr~a~ion of $628.Y7 be made, for said' purpose, was adopted/and by the following vote: <br /> <br /> <br />
