Wilson,

MinuTes of regular meeting, held March 9th, were read and approved.

The Committee ~npointed to consider complaints as to schedules and routing
of buses reported as follows:

"Your cemmittee 'appointed to consider complaints as to schedules and routing
of_b~ses, begs to report as.follows:
After having allowed all citizens sufficient time to register any protest,
your committee met with the City Manager on March 18th. We are of the opinion that the fol-
lowing suggested changes will not only be beneficial to the citizens of Portsmouth, but
would not increase, to any materia~ extent, the cost of operation nor interfere with the
present schedules.
(1) The'Prentis Park bus that now continues th~m Washington St., to
Lincoln, b~ re-routed at Harrison and Washington StSc, east on Harrison to Fifth, south on
Fifth to Lincoln and west on Lincoln, as at present.
(~) Sixth Avenue. The present schedule is only for partial time and we
recommend that this bus be operated thru-out the day an~ that instead of Charles St. being
the terminus, that the bus continue north to Leckie tt.~ before returning to High St.
(3) West Park View The present line goes west on Leckie St. to
Avenue, and thence north on First ~o Spratley, west on Sprattey to Guthrie and thence south
on Guthrie to Leckie . We suggest that instead of the bus~ going east back along Leckie St.
that it continue south for a distance of two blocks on Second Ave. to B St., thence east on
B St. to 1st Ave. and thence north on 1st Ave. to LeckieSt., thence along the present route.
(4) High St. we recommend that the buses continue east on High St. as
at present,to Crawford St. That instead of continuing south along~Crawford to County, and
west on County, that the bus make a ~urn in Crawford S~. at King. St. and return north to
High St. and thence west on High St. as along present lines for the remainder of their
routes. '

- (5)' Cradock buses. We suggest ~hat instead of the Cradock buses fo! -
lowing the'same territory as other lines, that it follow HighSt., west to Elm Ave., and
southon Elm Ave. to Geo. Washington Highway, returning along the same route.
(6) Several requests have been.made to extend the Westhaven line thru
the City Park to Olive Branch Cemetervo We feel that this is .very desirabIe an~ would be
of great convenlmnce to persons visiting the cemetery. However, as the bridge now crossing
from Westhaven to the City Park is not of sufficient width to permit has,age of vehicles as
wide as the buses, we suggest that this be taken up as soon as the netbridge across this
poin~ has been cqnstructed.
Respectfully,
CommitTee -
Leslie T. Fox
Pestle J. Wilson
George L. Grimes."

Motion of Mr. Weiseman to approve said report, and to refer s~me to the City
~anager, to confer with the V.E.P. Company, in ~eference to same, was adopted.

Motion of Mr. Fox to suspend rules,to hear the Bus Companies at this time,
was adopted. Mr. J. $. Barton spoke in favo~ of the Richmond G~eyhound Lines purchasing the
Peninsula Transit Corporation, and Mr. Robert M. Hughes spoke against same.

~otion of Mr. Fox, to take f~om the table the following resolution, was adopted:

"RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, IN OPPOSITION TO CHEA-
TION OF BUS MONOPOLY BETWEEN THE CITIES AND
COUNTIES OF HA3gPTON ROADS AREA T0 AND FROM
THE NORTH AND WEST.
At a deering of the Oouncil of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia,
held on the 9th day of March, 19~7, in Portsmouth, it was brought to
the attention of the Council that tbs Ric.hmond Greyhound Lines, Inc.,
operating a passenger bus and express service between Baltimore, Wash-
ing~on and Richmond, over U.S. Route No. l, and between Richmond and
the counties and cities of the Hampton Roads area over all of the avail
able routes, except those now operated by %hePeninsula Transit.
