42

Council, at its next meeting bringing to its attention the following new LeaEue service.
We are glad to be able to announce that followinga need expressed by both
municipal officials and the public, the League of Virginia Nunicipalit'les in conjunction
with the Virginia Police Executives Association and the State Division of Trade and Indus
tTial Education plans to hold annually a school for police recruits which will provide an
opportunity for all new members of the Police force to receive a thorough training course
under a staff of competent instructors.
The police recruit school this year is scheduled to be held at the University
of Richmond far two weeks, beginning Monday, June 21st, and is open to three groups of police
officers, as follows: (1) Police recruits employed during the past year; (2) applicants for
positions in the police department who have not yet been employed; (3) older members of the
force who have never taken the standard three-year police training course.
Members of the recruit school with the exception of those living in or near
Richmond will be ex'peered to live at the University of Richmond where rooms will be provided
free of charge. There is no registration fee for the school and the only expense outside of
traveling will be for meals which will be provided at cost in the University dining room, for
$18.00, for the ~wo. weeks term.
The class of necessity must be limited in the number of those in attendance,
and since this, we believe, is an unusual opportunity for your new police officers to receive
a thorough course of instruction at practically no expense, i wish to urge you to plan now
for as many of your officera as possible to file application which will be considered in the
order in which they are reeeived. The advantage of training new men from the various depart-
men~s of the State together at one point is obvious and it Ds believed that with your cooper-
ation, this recruit school can give to our local police departments, a ~ imilar service to
that provided each year for the state officers by the~Divlsion of Motor Vehicles.

Very sincerely yours,

(

Morton L. Wallerstein,
Executive Secretary,
League of Virginia Municipalities."

Motion of Mr. Hutchins to refer to the City ~anager, was adopted.

The Compensation report of the Treasurer, Commissioner of Revenue, and Com -
monwealth Attorney was received, and on moti~n of Mr. Hutchins, approved for payment.

On motion adjourned.

President

City Clerk.
