<br /> 'In view of the fact that a Bill is now pending in
<br /> Congress, looking toward the elimination of some of the ob
<br /> Jectionable features of the present Act, we recommend, with-
<br /> out prejudice as to the merits or demerits, that the matter
<br /> of Slum Clearance for Portsmouth be held in abeyance pending
<br /> the outcome of the new Bill.'

<br />Motion of Mr. Hutchins to concur in the Committee's report, was adopted.

<br />The following communications from the City Manager were read.:

<br />1st - "I am advised by the City Attorney t~at the Portsmouth Charter for
<br />City Manager form of government does not provide for an assistant Chief cf the Fire Department.
<br /> Capt. Richardson, who has been acting as Assistant Fire Chief, has
<br />therefore been ordered to resume his duties as Captain, but I have given him authority to act
<br />as Chief, in the absence of the Chief.~
<br />
<br />on motion, ss~e was received and filed.
<br />
<br /> 2nd eI have a letter from the Baptist Men~s Bible Class Association, and
<br />Parent Teachers' Association of Portsmouth~ inclosing resolution urging Norfolk, Portsmouth
<br />and Norfolk County to discontinue the sale of wine and beer from midnight on Saturday, to the
<br />following Monday at sunrise.
<br /> I believe we should call a Joint meeting of the City Council and
<br />Board of Supervisors to give serious consideration to this request. I suggest that our Mayor
<br />be requested to get in touch With the Chairman of the Board of Supervisors and arrauge for
<br />this meeting.~
<br />
<br />Motion of Mr. How~z~l to concur, was adopted;
<br />
<br /> Mr.~eiseman asked that it be recorded that his vote would not be influenced
<br />by what the City of Norfolk or Norfolk County did in the matter.
