Hut- <br />chins, Frank D~ Lawrence, C. E~ Warren, H~ Earl Welseman, Pearls J. Wilson, <br />sad the'Oity Manager~ <br /> <br />Minutes of r egu!ar meeting held May 9th, were read and approved. <br /> <br />The following commur~oations from the City 2.~uager were read: <br /> <br />The Manager presented the following letter, which was, on motion~ or ~ <br /> <br />doted filed: <br /> <br />~Hon. Chas. F. Harper, <br /> City Ms~ager~ <br /> Portsmouth~ Va. <br /> <br />. My dear Mr. Harper: <br /> <br /> It gives me a great deal of pleasure t~o quote for your <br />information the following pertinent remarks from a letter received from Oapt. C. R~ Robinson, <br />U. ~.No, Commending Officer of the U.B~Bo Colorado, written on the occasion of that battle - <br />abides departure from the Norfolk Navy Yard on 12 Maye ~uch expressions of gO~od will are in <br />keeping with the s taudards which we have come to expect from Norfolk and Portsmouth. <br /> ~ther items ~at have contributed much ~o a very p!ea- <br /> sant visit by this ship to t~e Na~ Yard are xxxxxx ~he cordial <br /> relations that exist between~ the Navy and the citizens of Nor - <br /> folk ~nd Portsmouth and ~he consideration suud justice with which <br /> all enlisted men have been traated by the local civil authorities. <br /> <br />(Signed)C. Navy ~ 0ommandant." <br /> <br />2nd - The Manager presented the following letter: <br /> <br /> "On account of ~he sudden departure of the Fleet from ~his area, only part <br />of the funds collected for Fleet Entertainment were used leaving balance to be distributed of <br />$1,980.46, on the basis of 82% to each contributor° <br /> The total amount collected $2,456o3~ in ~idition to this amount the sum <br />of $95.00 was pledged, but not collected. <br /> Pleasebe assured that Ohairman B~ B~ Fergeson ~ud every member of the com~ <br />mittee appreciate your fine spirit of co-operation~ and trust that the action of the committee <br />meets with your ~oproval. <br /> Oordially~ <br /> <br />FLEET ENTERTAINmeNT OOI~ITTEE <br /> <br />J.M. Overton~ Secretary~" <br /> <br /> Motion of Er. Hutchi~s to file ~he letter and that refund cheek of $369.00 <br />be deposited in the General Fund, was adopted. <br /> <br /> 3rd ~ "About the ist of April, Mrs. Esther Becket fell on the street near <br />the Market building~ broke her eye glasses and cut her face sligh~lye <br /> I instructed Dfc Denny to examine her and he reported there was no <br />permanent InJury~ Her arc_to,ney, Nrc Levin, est~ted Mrs~ Becket's damage~ at $150%OOo After <br />consultation with Mr. Barclay, the 0ity Attorney, he and I decided to pay $50.00 rather than <br />have t~e expense and trouble of a law suit. I hope the decision of the City Attorney mud Man- <br />ager meets wi~h the approval of the Oouncil~~ <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr~ Grimes~ to concur in the Manager's recommendation and to <br />propriate $50.00 for said purpose, was adopted. <br /> <br />~th ~ ~ne Nauager presented the follow, nE resolution: <br /> <br />ap- <br /> <br /> ~At its regular meeting held ti~is 23rd day of ~ay~ 1939~ at <br />Portsmouth~ Vlrginta~ the Oity Council of Portsmouth, being advised <br />~hat the Interstate Commerce Oommiss~on, Division 5, has reooened <br />for rehea~ing the case of Richmond Gte%nounal Lines~ Incorporated- <br />Genteel ~ Peninsula Trsmsit ~orporation~ No. NC~F-119~ and this <br />0ouuoil being of opinion t~t it is in the public interest th~.t <br />Richmond Greyhound Lines~ !noorporated~ be permitted to ~t~ke over <br />and operate the Per~insula Transit Lines, we recommend to the Gem- <br />mission that the permit be~ given so to do. <br /> And further, this Council requests the City Manager to pre- <br />sent a copy of this resolution, attested by the Clerk of the Ooun - <br />oil, to the Interstate Oommerce Oommission for its consideration in <br />the rehearing of said case. <br /> <br />Notion ~_of l;~r. Lawrence to approve said resolution, was adopted. <br /> <br /> <br />
