<br /> Minu~es of regular meeting held March 12th, 1940, were read and approved.

<br /> The City Ms~ager presented an invitation from the Federation of Garden Clubs,
<br />asking the Council to meet with them in the Council Chamber on Wednesday evening, March 27th,
<br />at 8:OO o'clock.
<br />
<br />The following eommunication from the City E anager was read:
<br />
<br /> "The Se~lng Project, which employs~approximately eighty-six women, in the three
<br />sewing roo~s operated by the City, runs out during May.
<br /> If it is to be continued, it is necessary for us to make application to the
<br />government at t~is time. The City's cart of the cost to extend this project for six months,
<br />from May, will be approximately $~,80~.OO." ~

<br />Motion of Mr. Hutchins to place an appropriation of $4,8OOOOO on first reading,
<br />
<br /> The City~hnager verbally report&d' tha~ lights for the soft ball diamond would
<br /> ~ $800.00. The Manager and~Oity~ngi~eer were authorized to make an inspection
<br />cost ~oprox~mately
<br />of similar projects in Norfolk, Suffolk and other nearby places and report back to the 0ouncil.

<br /> Privilege of the floor was granted Herbert Simpson, who thanked the Council
<br />for the interest shown in the soft ball diamond asd the action taken.
<br />
<br /> Mr. ~'arren reported that the committee appointed by the Chair, on Fe ruary
<br /> b 13th,
<br />to confer with Mr. K~t~re_l with reference to year-around playgrounds, had met, but they did
<br />not have sufficient information to m~ke & definite report; same will be made after completion
<br />of 8~ta. ....

<br /> Notion of Mr. Yoward to amend same by adding $15.OO-license for person or per -
<br />cleaning fowls, etc., was adopted.

<br />The following communication from the City Attorney was read:

<br />to the City sufficient land to widen Chestnut St. to its uniform width and in consideration of
<br />such ~on~yanoe the City wil2 relieve him of ~a~.i.~ue~ ta~es on the~parcel of land described on
<br />the Land cooks of the City as "Piece - ~84.3 ~eet, more or less, W.S. Chestnut Street", I beg
<br />to report that Mr. Albertson conveyed ~o the City by deed dated December 20, 1939, the strip
