An app~priation of ~lO,OOO. for the iourc~se of thirty-five acres of land Joining the Oity Park ~ud Olive Branch Cemetery~ laid on table at last meeting~ was taken Motion of Mr. Howard to m~e an appropriation of $10~000~ for said purpose~ was adopted, and by the following vote: Ayes: Leigh, C-rimes~ Howard~ HutCnins, Lawrence~ Warren, ~Weisem~ Wilson Nays:~ Fox ~ ~op~priation of $1,800.OO for playg~unds for colored children, laid on table a~ last meeting~ was t~n up~ Motion of Mr. Weissman to app~priate $1,800.O0 for said pu~ose, was adopted, and by the following vote~ Ayes: Leigh~ Fox~ C~rimes, Howard, Hutchins~ La~ence~ Warren~ Wei semen, Wilson Nays: No~ - NEW BUSINESS The follo%~ng letter was read, and on motion, ordered filed: "At a recent meeting of Portsmouth Post ~993 Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U..S. I was directed by unanimous vote of the Post tO write a letter of thanks to you for your recent action in oresenting our Dr~ Co_~p with a set of colors. ~e sincerely appreciate this action both for the beautiful set of colors and also for the fact that our CorpUs efforts to advance the interests of the City are apparently ~opreciated. Our Coro will put forth more effort and parade more proudly at Roanoke on June 17th because they ~ave these beautiful colors ahead of them reminding them at all times that the City of Portsmouth is interested in them and is behind them in their efforts to keep Portsmouth in the front a~ the DepartmenZ convention. This tax had to be paid in o~ier to get city tag for automobile. In checking this over at the court house, it was a tax w~eh I did not owe It was found to be a mistake. I am therefore asking you to refund same amount to T~nking you in advs~oe~ I ~ Howard Riddick,~ The following letter was rest: "In the past, we have had reason to be grateful to your Honorable Body for the refund of the rental of the City Auditorium on the occasion of Our Lady of Victory~ Annual School Exercises.
