December 27th, 1940, <br /> <br />Motion of Er. Howard to grant said refund~ was adopted. <br /> <br />to <br /> <br />The following letter was read and ordered filed~ <br /> <br /> ~The members of Local ~539 I.Ao of F~F~ of the Portsmouth Fire Department, wish <br />thank you for the many favors you h~.ve bestowed upon this dep~rtment in the past. <br /> We also extend to you the best of wishes for a hs~py and prosperous New Year. <br /> <br />Respectfully yours, <br /> <br />K.L. Host, Treasurer." <br /> <br /> The following letter w~s read, and on motion of Mr~ Fox, laid on table until <br />next meeting: <br /> <br /> "I have today paid $25, O0 for the use of the City Auditorium on January !$th, <br />for a Bowl of Rice Party for medical aid to the Chinese. <br /> I would respectfully ask that this sum be refunded. <br /> Er. E. C~ Allen is treasurer of the Relief F~ud. <br /> I would also ask that permission be granted to have a tag day on January !4th, <br />for the above-mentioned fund. <br /> <br />Yours respectfully, <br /> <br /> JoDavis Reed~ Chairman, <br />Portsmouth Chapter <br /> <br />On mo~ion of Mr. ~ox, the following resolution was adopted: <br /> <br />~'~w-HEREAS~ under an Act of Congress of the United States, providing <br />for compulsory training for military service~ and a proclamation <br />of President of the United States declaring a national emergency <br />to exist, a number of e~ployees of the City of Portsmouth will be <br />called into the military and naval service of their country° <br />Now~ therefore, be it resolved by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth~ Virgini~ that it is the wish and desire of the City <br />Council, and~ as they believe, of the citizans and taxpayers of <br />the City, that all employees of the City who may volunteer or be <br />called into the military or naval service o~ the United States of <br />America during the present national emergency will be re-instated, <br />upon their honorable discharge from such service~ and be in good <br />physical or mental condition, into their former positions with. the <br />City, with ~he same order of seniority as if they had not been <br />called Luto service~ and the City Manager of the City of Portsmouth <br />is requested to grant a furlough to any employee of the City who may <br />volunteer or be called into the military or naval service for the <br />period of such service." <br /> <br />On motion adjourned. <br /> <br />C~ty Clerk <br /> <br />Approved - /~ ~ / / <br /> P re sident ~ <br /> <br /> <br />
