Haug, Actin~ City Mansger.. <br /> <br /> Minutes of~regular meeting held May 27th were corrected and ~oproved. Minutes <br />of special meeting of June 9th were ~op~oved. <br /> <br />Report of Committees - <br /> <br /> 1st "~e, yo. ur .committee ~opointed to confer with representatives of the <br />Virginia Protective Force~ regarding the purchase of uniforms, beg to report ..that ~e had a <br />meeting ~.~th Capt. Robert R. Beaton~ of Portsmouth Company~ Virginia Protective Force~ and, <br />as authorized a~ the time of appointment, we instructed Capt. Beaton to purchase the uniforms <br />and transmit the bill for payment by the City o f Portsmouth in an amount not exceeding <br /> <br />Respectfully, <br /> <br />Leslie T. Fox <br />George L. We recommend that~ if necessary, the O~ty <br /> furni~u sites for both ~the white and colored <br /> recreation centers. ~e further recommend <br /> that a study be started immediately to select <br /> suitable sites. <br /> 2. ~e recommend that the sum of $1,800o be appro- <br /> priated for the services of a trained recrea - <br /> tion director, who w!12 be responsible to the <br /> City. <br /> Respectfully submitted, <br /> <br />~ssell M. Lawrence." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. ~ox to approve Item No. I and to place on its first reading <br />Item ~2, was adopted. <br /> <br /> 3rd - "Mr. T. A. Wi!!ett, C?mirman of the Joint Stadium Committee, has <br />asked me to reoort that the C~mmittee has ~had one meeting, and D~s sen~ out questionnaires <br />to sixteen southeastern cities, asking for info~mation as to the organization and operation <br />of similar property in these cities. <br /> The 0hairm~u~ also wishes me to inform you that he hopes to be able <br />to make a report at the next Co,soil meeting. <br /> Respectfully submitted, <br /> <br />Acting City Manager." <br /> <br />On motion ordered filed. <br /> <br />The following communications from the City Manager were read: <br /> <br /> ls~ - "Mr. G. CuD has applied for a renewal of restaurant license for the <br />year beginning May lst~ 194!, fo-r ~hich I have refused to issue a certificate. - My refusai <br />was based on the License Tax Ordinance, which reads as follOws: <br /> <br />'Provided, however, that before s license is <br />issued for any of the above restaurants, eat- <br />ing houses, etc., a certificate shall be ob - <br />rained fro~ the City ~nager as to the fitness <br />of the applicant ~ud the desirability of the olaoe <br />or location at ~nioh the restaurants, eating houses, <br />etc., are to be conducted, and no certificate shall <br />be issued ~o any person who has ~een convicted <br />within twelve monShs for a violation of the liquor <br />laws, or for any place in ~ieh liquor has been <br />found within six months.' <br /> <br /> <br />
