let ~At the meeting of the City Council, held on June lOth, the question of
charging for parking on Hi~n St., on national legal h61idays, was referred to the City Manager.
Inasmuch as the parking meters were ifistalled to facilitate the trans-
action of business in the business district, ~ud due to the fa6t that business is suspended on
national legal holidays, I ?eapectfully recommend that the parking meter ordinance~be amended
2nd - ,,I respectfully recommend ~hat an appropriation of ~200o00 be made to
cover the City's portion of a WoP.A. project to operate a Homes Registration office for Defense
Workers and others°~ The. Federal Government will contribute $788°OO to this project.
Zn my opinion, this is one of~the most imoortant proJeots~ in connectio~
with the housing problem, that has been initiated in Portsmouth, in recent years. This Homes
Registration office will fill a long-felt need, and will also collect important data concerning
the ~mount of ho~ing needed in Portsmouth and vicinity°
I am indebted to the Portsmouth C~mber of Commerce for providing quar-
ters for the personnel engaged in this project, and for the offer of their services in helping
to get this work ~der way, as quickly as possible."
