If we can.
get title to the property acceptable to the Federal Work~ Agency, I recommend that the prooer
ty be purchased as a site for the new fire s~ation.~

Motion of Mr. Hut~s~ins to concur~i~ the Manager's recommendation arid to
place on its first reading~ an appropriation of $5,000.00 for said purpose, was adopted.

The following letter from~the City Attorney was read:

referred to me.

adopted.

husband,
up~

was adopted,

~The attached letter from Mrs. ~.S. Taussig, Vice Admiral, U.S.N., (Ret.)
C?~irman. ~

~February ! 3th, 1942 o
Referring to my letter of February 4th~ in which I requested reconsidera-
tion of the declaration to consider withdrawing from the Hampton Roads Sanitation District~I
mm forwarding herewith copy of a letter jus~ received from 0olonel Gitmore, Director of the
Defense Public Works Division of the Federal Wor~s Agency.
This letter, as you will note, was written in reply to a letter from me to
Colonel Gilmore asking what wouldb e the reaction of the Federal Works~AMency with respec~ to
Federal aid for sewage disposa~ systems in tb~s area should the bill introduced by the dele
gates from Portsmouth and Norfolk Oounty~which will permit delaying of the completion of these
projects for five years~ be enacted into law.
The important points in the inclosed letter are that the Federal Works
Agency ie opposed to the use of any Federal funds on any project ~fnich is not to be undertaken
at the earliest practicable time, and it is also opposed to the allocation of funds to indivi-
dual municipalities and counties when such are included within the corporate limits of a corn ~
mission.
I believe this letter from Ool. Gilmore is of sufficient importance to your
community for the governing body to reconsider its decision to withdraw from the District and
also to consider a withdrawal Of the bill which permits those communities which expect to renmia
out of the District to delay completion of their sewage disposal systems for a period of five

years,
~he Committee
hearings on this bill on Thursd~v~

on the Chesapeake and its tributaries is going to hold
February 19th a~ 3: OOo ~clock.
Very truly yours~

J~K.Taussig,Vice Admiral~ U.$.N.
