<br />Ject Division on Docket VA ~-lq3, Portsmouth Fire Equipment, to proceed immediately to put -
<br />chase one ?50 gallon and one 1000 gallan pumper.
<br /> I would like for ym to authorize me to proceed immediately wlt~
<br />the pure.base of this equipment, in order tha~ it can be delivered here within the one hundred
<br />days as promised."

<br />ceived for the purchase of a 1,COO-gallon pumper at the price
<br />of $10,~bl.30 and for the purchase of a ?50 gallon pumper at
<br />the price of $8,76!.77, which~have been appr~ ed by the Federal
<br />Wor~s Agency,
<br /> NOW, THEREFORE, Be it resolved by ~he Oeuneil of the City o f
<br />Portsmou~h~ Virginia~ ~hat the City Manager be authorized to

<br />cilities necessary for the Department.
<br /> I am re-arramging the beats, three of the eleven, numbers 9,10
<br />and ll will be placed on bicycles. At the present time ~here are fifty four men and two womer
<br />on the force and schedules have been arramged which I t~zink will make this adequate for the
<br />time being.
<br /> If in t he event this present experiment proves we need ~ore men,
<br />I will immediately request the number needed ~o fully protect the citizens of Portsmouth."

<br /> 3rd - ~Relative to a letter from the Sons of America, referred to me
<br />for disposition, I would like to advise that all Police beats have been re-organized, three
<br />additional officers put on the Force and three morels re to be plaaed within the week.
<br /> Two policemen have been assigned to the area suggested by this
<br />group and the Chief cf Police is keeping in close touch with the ~er~s office. If a~di-
<br />tional officers are needed for the welfare of the commuhity, they will be added to the force
<br />as available."

<br /> ~th - "I find it necessary that there be some adjustments in the sick
<br />leave of the Police and FireDepartments. Therefore,'effective August 15th~ any member of
<br />ther department who is out sick, on the'presentation of a certificate from the City Physician, l
<br />wi!~ not lose that day's pay. Also, ! am requiring all member~of both departments to umdergo
<br />physical examinations."
