<br />Minutes of regular meeting held February 23rd were read and approved.

<br />The following communications from the City Manager were read:

<br />City Manager and ~he Honorable City Council its congratulations for the prompt and efficient
<br />manner in which you provided office space for the Portsmouth Rationing Board.'~

<br />On motion ordered filed.

<br /> 2nd - "I would appreciate an ~opropriation of $8OO~..O0 for the rent on
<br />Building glO-12 Crawford St."
<br />
<br /> Motion of Mr. HutOhins to appropriate $800.00 for said purpose, was
<br />adopted, and by the following vote:

<br /> 4th - "I would appreciate an appropriation of $$20~OO per year to the
<br />funds of temporary gratuity for school teachers to Miss Mab!e Pollard~ who was inadvertently
<br />left from the list.~

<br /> Motion o f Mr. Howard to appropriate $4~O.OO for said purpose was adopted,
<br />and by the gollowing vote:

<br /> 5th - "I would aooreciate your ~mending the appropriation made for repairs
<br />to the City Market Building for the k~tioning Board ~o "Repairs to Buildings for Rationing
<br />Boards, Shore Patrol ~nd other City,State and Federal offices at 810-812 Crawford St."
<br /> I am requesting this because, under the oresent City Ordinan6e,
<br />this fund is ear-marked for specific use i n the Market Building, an~ as this fund is available
<br />for renovating the building at 810 Crawford St., I would prefer to ha~e the records corrected
<br />for future reference.~'

<br /> Motion of Mr. Hutchins to concur in t he Manager's recommendation,was
<br />adopted.
<br />
<br /> 6th - "I am in receipt of a telegram from Mr. PIN,. Simmons, Regional Di-
<br />rector, Office of Defense Transportation, Washington, D. C., stating that he would not be able
<br />to be in Portsmouth on March ~th.
<br /> Necessary arrangements have been made to start the new bus routes
<br />
<br />on Monday, March 15th."

<br /> "Confirming our teleohone conversation of this date~ there is attached
<br />hereto a copy of a letter dated Februa~ 24th, 1943, from the Director, Governmental Division
<br />War Production Board, Washington~ D. C., declining ~o issue a preference rating for the con-
<br />struction of the fire station under the above-captioned proJect.(ProJect VA 45-153 - Fire
<br />Station and EquipmenZ, Portsmouth, Virginia).
<br /> No further action, therefore, should be taken to effect construction con-
<br />tracts on the bids received February 18th, 1943.
