Inclosure -

"Having had no enlightening news about the restoration of our elimi-
nated bus line in the past ten days, would like to ask what intelli-
gent course is being taken in this matter.
It is needlessto say again, for it has been said on numerous occa-
sions, that the patriotism of the 16OO people who live in this af-
fected area can no~ for one momen~ be questioned, so why, with the
additional 6000 miles which the O.D.T. granted the V.E.& P. Company,
and the five new buses that were put on various routes last week,
were we so rudely discriminated against.
I think it high time that an injunction should ~e gotten a~ainst the
V.E. & P. Company and the O.D.T. at once, so th=t %~ may h~.ve some
immediate action,
You well know that we still have 65 year old women, mothers ~dth in-
fants, as well as expectant mothers who have to walk one mile in~e
rain and sun over unpaved streets in order ~o catch a bus.
Also, doesn't it strike you as ridiculous that this line was elimi-
nated to conserve tires mud fuel? T~n to add insult to injury, the
O~D,T. had the audacity to lift the pleasure driving ban in, this section.
I ask you, is this common sense? Even a freshman in High School could do
a better Job of 8lscriminating %hah that.
~ight I suggest, if necessary, that the proper authorities of Portsmouth
~ud Norfolk, as I know they too have some sections which are in the same
shape as ours, get together and take some immediate legal action with
the immediate restoration of all lines concernedi n view.
Would appreciate very much if you would take this matter up with the
City Manager, Transportation Department and other members of the City
Council at your next meeting.
Thanking you, I ~m~
Yours very truly,

T. Walton Smith, President,
Monroe Ward Civic Club."

On motion ordered filed.

~th -
on Tuesday, September ~th~
that a~ an early date, we

'~Mr. Caldwell of the Office of Defense Transportation was in the Cityl
with reference to taxic~o records and needs and I have been advised
could anticipate approval of ten additional cabs.~
