<br /> Motion of Mr. Howard to suspend the rules to hear Mr. Earl Ac Oadmus,was
<br />Er. Cadmus presented the following:

<br /> "Your petitioners respectfully represent as follows:
<br /> That they are owners and operators of County cabs which come into the
<br />City of Portsmouth to discharge of passengers from the County of Norfolk. Your petitioners
<br />are not allowed under the Portsmouth City Ordinance to carry passengers back to the County
<br />They therefore pray that tl~is Honorable Body will see fit To permit the owners to have desig-
<br />nated stands from which they may be allowed to pick up passengers for a return trip to the
<br />County. The O.D.T. has said that they should do this when operating under their certificates
<br />of necessity~ They are willing to pay a reasonable fee to the Oity of Portsmouth for this
<br />privilege and wit~t abide by the regulations that may beimposedby the City of Portsmouth;
<br />that they will do and perform all necessary acts that the City will require for this prlvi -

<br /> Motion of Mr. Wilson to suspend the rules to hear from a committee from
<br />the Oentral Labor Union, was adopted. Mr. Gal!agher, of said Committee, aske~ the Council
<br />for permission to have a carnival in the City, all taxes to be p~id.

<br /> Notion o f Nrc Hutohins to refer to the City Manager and City Attorney,
<br />was adopted.

<br /> Motion of Mr. Grimes to suspend the rules to hear the Fairlawn Realty
<br />Company'-s application for the placing of a motion picture theatre on the~corner of L!neoln St.
<br />and. Des Moines Ave..and a number of the residents of Harrison Ward in opposition to same,was
<br />adopted.-

<br /> 2nd - "The attached resolution has been requested by the Sheriff to
<br />supplant resolutions previously passed by this body on April 25th, and on May 9th, both of
<br />which are rescinded, subject to this one being approved."

<br /> ~WHEREAS, the State Compensation Bos~d did on
<br />~he twenty-fourth day of April, 1954, authorize the employ-
<br />ment of an additional deputy in the office of Sergeant Clover,
<br />at an 'annual rate of compensation o f twenty-one hundred sixty
<br />($2,160.00) dollars, pmrsuant to h~ request,
<br /> WHEREAS, it is impossible to secure a deputy
<br />for less than twenty-one hundred sixty ($2,160.00) dollars,
<br /> BE IT RESOLVED, That the Council of the City
<br />ef Portsmouth advise the Compensation Board of its willingness
<br />to pay its proportionate part of twenty-one hundred sixty
<br />($2,160.00) dollars necessitated by the emoloyment of this one
<br />deputy allowed. The salary of said deput~-to be retroactive
<br />between the dates of May loth and the. date of this resolution,
<br />and the resolutions of April 25th and Nay 9th are rescinded."

<br />On motion o.f Mr. Hutchins, said reso!u~ion was adopted.
