Piedmont." <br /> <br />The follow-lng letter was read: <br /> <br /> ,Tou will please find enclosed Form ~CoB.-!A with which I would like to re- <br />place the form presented to your board on-October 20th, 1944, showing a reduction in the total <br />of salary and expenses and also a request for additional deputies ~o meet the requirements of <br />the Department of Corrections which I believe to be practical and safe. <br /> <br /> In addition to deputies named in my request for 1945, I find it necessary <br />zo employ three deputy sergeants, principally for Jail work. <br /> The office of the Sergeant of the City o f Portsmouth should be open at all <br />times with one deputy in the office andone deputy on the inside of the Jail, who should not <br />have the main keys in his possession. There should be a positive a~d direct communicating ser- <br />vice between the Jail and office of the City Sergeant. <br /> The affairs of the Sergeant's office should be conducted strictly by the <br />force of the Sergeant, to do this and to meet the requirements of the Department of Dorrections, t <br />three additional deputies are hereby requested at once'to carry on for the year 1944 at a sal- <br />ary of twenty four hundred dollarm each per year as is now paid the Polise officers of the City <br />of P~rtsmouth, and the continuance of the came number of men together with those named in the <br />request for salary and e x2penses for ~he ~eam 1945. <br /> <br /> Yours very truly, <br /> <br /> R.Ei Glover, Sergeant of the City of Portsmouth." <br /> <br /> Motion of Mn. Howard that we ask Major Rice M. <br />Corrections, to visit the City Council at his convenience, owin~ to <br />what the City should furnish the jail, was adopted. <br /> <br />Youell, Commissioner of <br />the confused statements of <br /> <br />The following letter was received, and on motion, ordered filed: <br /> <br /> "I have received your resolution regarding my services and the services of <br />my command to the communities embraced by the Harbor Defenses of Chesapeake Bay. <br />In addition to being a most pleasant surprise your resolution emphasizes <br />mos~ strongly ~he close feeling and spirit of co-operation existin~ between the Army, the Navy <br />and the Civil communities in this area. <br /> Since coming to For~ Monroe in November, 1940, it has been my earnestde-m~s <br />siye to assist in the development mud progress of the area and ~o always remember that the _ - <br />sion of the Harbor Defenses of Chesapeake Bay in its defense was one o f service Zo the commun- <br />ity. <br /> The resolution o f the Oouncil of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, of the <br /> <br /> <br />
