The Stokes assessmen5 should ka~e been omitted from the land book adopted2 Motionof Mr. ~Hutchins to concur in the Collestor's recommendation, was The following letter from the City Bergeant w as read: ~"This matter was originally tsi~en up with your City Manager by letters, none of which were answered, neither were there a request from lnim for a conference, rather he used very discourteous tactics which ~o my mind were no~ fair; hence tlais letter ~o you as Mayor of tD~e Cisy of Portsmoutno You wili find inclosed my letter to the Compensation Board dated November 13th, 1944 for yomr information. I very respectfully request the appointment of a suitable ~ommittee from your Honorable Body whom I believe will amicably adjust tkis matter and quickly. Fox presented the following resolution: "WHEREAS, a majority of ~e people cf our Oity believe the City of Portsmouth should pay fitting public tribute to its sons and daughters who hav~ served in ~ne armed forces, and %~F~S, it has been suggested that p~o!ic recognition should be in the form of a library, to be kno%m as PORTSMOUTH i~UB~LIC LIBRAP. Y, which csm be used no~ only by the returning members of the service but by future generations as ~well and will.be a lsting tribute to those who gave their ser- vices and theZr lives that this Nation should forever remain free~ and WHEREAS, a group of citizens expects to solicit contributions from the peoole of Portsmouth for the erection of such a Memorial; NOW, TF~REFORE, BE IT Y~SOLVED by the Council of the City of Portsmouth that the sum of Twenty-five Thousand Dollars-be ear-marked end contributed by the City as its part of such~Memorial and that the said Twenty- five Thousand Dollars, or so much thereof as may be necessary, be made avail- able upon the completion of the Memorial, the plans, soecifications and loca- -rich of which having previously been approved by the ~o~ncil o f the City o f Portsmouth, Virginia." was adopted.
