"WF~EAS, the City Co~ucil of portsmouth, Virginia, at its semi-
monthly meetihE of April 2~tk, 19~5, appointed ' a'committee to star~ work ~mmediat~ely. in secur-
ing all data and information ~eeess~ry, with the service of a competent Engineer to make a tho-
rough ~survey concerning the possibility of ~he Gity of Portsmguth, Virginia acquiming or build-
ing a Municipal power plant.
Whereas, for the bes~ interest of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia~
and to supplement its income or revenue in the event ~he J~oint ownership of the City of Ports-
mouth, Norfolk County Ferries are disposed of or are endangered by the building of a tunnel or
bridge, either of ~he aforementioned physical connections would curtail drastically~our income
or revenue from the Ferries which constitute a major factor in our present tax rate of ~2.50
per hundred.
Whereas, we believe and maintain that the City of Portsmouth, Vir -
ginia should build or acquire its own-municipal power plant in order that the income or revenue
derived therefrom , along with the Municipal Water Works and its other holdings, may be augment~
ed to the extent that the present tax rate of $2.50 p~r huhdred would be lowered.
Therefore, the Portsmouth Junior Chamber of Commerce is highly in
accord ~ith the appointment of such a Committee, and,~akes this opportunity to commend the Hon-
orable ~ayor and the City Council of Portsmouth, Virginia, for ~heir actiQn in ~hismatter.
Inasmuch as the Portsmouth Junior Chamber of Commodore is vitally
inter~st~d in the civic and industrial progress of the City of Portsmouth, virginia and adJa -
cen~ communities,-it is requested that tt~ Portsmouth Junior Ohamber of Commerce be given the
opportunity to serve in any way possible to consummate the SubJec~ Proposal.
