The following letter was read and ordered filed: "With regard to the petition as for~arded to you at an earlier date from the Austin R. Davis, Camp Number 4, United Spanish War Veterans with regard to the removal of the Confederate Monument located at th~ intersec$ion of High and Court Streets. At the regular meeting of this Post, held on the evening of December lZthj 1945, we read on the floor, a copy of the same petition that has been forwarded to 'you by the organization mentioned above. After much discussion, a vote was raked to determine the attitude of this Post. Whereas, it is unanimously agreed and resolved by this Post that we are definitely not in accordance with the aforesaid oetition and have gone on record as being def- initely opposed to the removal of said monument, I have been instructed to inform you of this Post's feeling w~h regard~to this matter. Yours truly, Ernest H.~Morgan, AdJdtan$." On motion of ~r. Howard, the following resolution was adopted: "Resolved,- that the representatives from this body, namely Mayor Leslie T. Fox, and Councilman James N. Howard, who were heretofore appointed as members of'the Ports- mouth-Norfolk County Committee for the Disposition of Public War Housing in the City of Ports- mouth, be, and they are hereby empowered, together with ~he representatives duly appointed by the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, the Portsmouth Heal Estate Board and the Housing Authority of the City of Portsmouth, to continue as a functioning group, with authority to interpret the report heretofore made to the Council, and to co-ordinate the problems in -the area within the official framework of the said report; and the Committee sh~l! make regular reports to this body as to their actions hereunder."
