January 22nd, 19~6. <br /> <br />propriation of public funds to be used as aforesaid and that a comm~ tee from this Post be <br />appointed by the Commander to wait upon theCity Council for that purpose 'and that these reso- <br />lutions be then presented and that they be spread upon the minutes of this Post and delivered <br />to the press. <br /> <br />W. Ernest Acton, Jr., Chairman.~ <br /> <br />him to <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Howard to refer said resolution to the City Manager and for <br />meet w_th the committee again to try to work out a satisfactory plan, was adopted. <br /> <br />The following letter was read and ordered filed: <br /> <br /> "With regard to the petition as for~arded to you at an earlier date from <br />the Austin R. Davis, Camp Number 4, United Spanish War Veterans with regard to the removal of <br />the Confederate Monument located at th~ intersec$ion of High and Court Streets. <br /> At the regular meeting of this Post, held on the evening of December lZthj <br />1945, we read on the floor, a copy of the same petition that has been forwarded to 'you by the <br />organization mentioned above. <br /> After much discussion, a vote was raked to determine the attitude of this <br />Post. <br /> Whereas, it is unanimously agreed and resolved by this Post that we are <br />definitely not in accordance with the aforesaid oetition and have gone on record as being def- <br />initely opposed to the removal of said monument, I have been instructed to inform you of this <br />Post's feeling w~h regard~to this matter. <br /> <br />Yours truly, <br /> <br /> Ernest H.~Morgan, AdJdtan$." <br /> <br /> On motion of ~r. Howard, the following resolution was adopted: <br /> <br /> "Resolved,- that the representatives from this body, namely Mayor Leslie <br />T. Fox, and Councilman James N. Howard, who were heretofore appointed as members of'the Ports- <br />mouth-Norfolk County Committee for the Disposition of Public War Housing in the City of Ports- <br />mouth, be, and they are hereby empowered, together with ~he representatives duly appointed by <br />the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, the Portsmouth Heal Estate Board and the Housing Authority <br />of the City of Portsmouth, to continue as a functioning group, with authority to interpret the <br />report heretofore made to the Council, and to co-ordinate the problems in -the area within the <br />official framework of the said report; and the Committee sh~l! make regular reports to this <br />body as to their actions hereunder." <br /> <br />On motion adjourned. <br /> <br />City Clerk. <br /> <br />Approv~ ~~ <br /> Vice P~s iden~. <br /> <br /> <br />
