Alston presented the following: <br /> <br /> "A group of colored citizens have organized themselves into a Provi- <br />sional Committee for the purpose of establishing a colored branch of the Young Men'.s Christian <br />Association here in Pcrt~mouth. To this date, funds have been solicited through ~he~ sale of <br />memberships, as concrete e~idence that the desire for a T,M.C.A. is genuine and will be sup - <br />ported. <br /> We, the Provisional Committee, have been advised that the City of <br />Portsmouth will no~ exercise its privilege ~o secure the Federal Works Administration building <br />at 1300 Chestnut Street, now being used as United Service Organization Club, which will termi- <br />nate its activities on February 28th, 19~6, the building then becoming surplus property. <br /> Therefore, we petition the Council: <br /> That with the waiver of i~s privilege, to recommend that this build- <br />ing be turned over for use as a Colored Branch T.M.C.A. and that Mr. Owens, the City Manager, <br />be authorized to take appropriate steps ~o inform the F.W.~. officials of this action and this <br />recommendation. <br /> Thanking you for your considerati6n and begging you to look forward <br />with us to a colored branch T.M.C.A. <br /> Tours truly, <br /> <br />(Signed) <br /> <br />E.
