~Whereas, Fort Lane Street from the north side of North
S~reet to the east side of Park Avenue is in deplorable
conditlon and is a very heavily traveled street, parti-
cularly by ambulances carrying sick and injured patients
to and from the hospital;
And whereas the street directly on t he north and east
side~ of the hospital is in particularly rough condition,
thereby causing much pain and discomfort to ambulance pa-
tients;
Therefore, be it resolved that the Board of Directors
request the City of Portsmouth to pave the above-mentioned
street in concrete and that a copy of this resolution
be s~nt to the City Nanager fort presentation to the Council
"This organization is very concerned about conditions at the home. for our
aged citizens as recently revealed by the Portsmouth Star. The majority of our membership are
citizens of Portsmouth, each and every one of whom feel ashamed t~t they live in a community
where those in the twilight of life, and so deserving of better than average living conditions
have been existing in an atmosphere that must have bred discouragement and disillusion in the
hardiesZ individual.
That some public officials have allowed a bad condition to deterioriate to
the present low level over a period of some years, could not be truthfully denied. The two
hundred odd Portsmouth taxpaying members in our organization rightfully expect very early ac-
tion by the proper officials ~o bring about a condition of which the residents of Portsmsuth
might be proud. It may welt be that fate may require a member of one of our immediate fami -
lie~ to seek a haven at the City Home, and who knows, perhaps even one of our own members may
some day enter its doors.
We have appointed a committee. ~o follow future action taken toward adequate
solution of this problem. We expect their reoort~ to reflect progress. We sincerely hope that
this organization will be called upon to co-operate in the event citizens~of the City are
called upon for assistance which will speed corrective measures.

Sincerely yours,

H. V. Corbett, Secretary.~
