<br />Mr. Lawrence excused from further attendance.

<br /> An appropriation of $761.OO for repairs to doors at Port Norfolk Fire Station
<br />placed on its first reading at last meeting, was taken up.
<br />
<br /> Motion of Mr. Howard to ~opropriate $761.OO for said purpose, was adopted,
<br />and by the following vote:
<br />
<br />Ayes: Fox, Howard, Sturtevan~, Warren, Weiseman, Wilson
<br />Nays: None
<br />
<br /> An appropriation of $4~650.00 to purchase free text books for elementary pu
<br />pils, placed on its first reading at last meeting, was taken up.
<br />
<br /> Motion of Mr. Warren vo appropriate $$,650.O0 for said purpose, was adopted,
<br />and by the following vote:
<br />
<br />Ayes: Fox, Howard: Sturtevant, Warren, Weiseman, Wilson
<br />Nays: None
<br />
<br />The report of the City Clerk and Auditor for April was received and ordered
<br />
<br />filed.
<br />
<br />The following letter was read and referred to ~he School Board:

<br /> The following letter was read, and on motion of Mr, Howard, $25.00 was appro-
<br />priated for said purpose:

<br /> "The citizens of the City wish to thank your Honorable Body for i~s donation
<br />in the past.
<br /> Again we are soliciting a donation to assist in mesting expenses incident to
<br />parade and exercises on Memorial Day, May 30th, 19~6.
<br /> This year, we hope to honor our dead in a very fitting way.

<br /> The following letter was read and on motion of Mr. Howard, referred zo the
<br />Welfare Department:
<br />
<br /> "Mr. John W. Swoveland was arrested for disorderly conduct on April 2nd,
<br />19~6 and was fined by Judge William H. Cast, in ~he amount of $53.5©.
<br /> Mr. Swoveland is an Epileptic and was suffering at that time from one of
<br />these attacks, and was confined in the City Jail over night.
<br /> Mr. Swoveland is in receipt of service connected Pension from ~he Veterans
<br />Administration, Roanoke, Virginia. He has made application for'admittance to the Roanoke
<br />Facility for treatment of this condition.
<br /> Mr. Swoveland is married and this money is need~ by him in order that he
<br />may have the necessities of life, and it is requested by'your H~_9~able Body to have this
<br />$53.5© returned to this man in ~rder that no further hardships will take place with him and
<br />his wife. I have talked with Judge Cast on the~bove matter and he did not know at the time
<br />that the man was suffering from the &oove condition and stated that the return of the fine
<br />could only be made by the City Council.
