J. Davis Eeed spoke in favor of increas- <br />for the Eibra~y f~om $8,800.00 to $10,000.00. <br /> <br />The following letter from the School Board was read: <br /> <br /> "~t a special meeting of the School Board it was unanimously decided to <br /> submit to you~ Honorable Body a letter to be signed by'the President of the School Board set- <br /> ting forth the need of additional appropriation of $~5,~00. for a special increase ins ala~ies <br />~of school personnel, ~Zais letter is inclosed herewith. <br /> The Board also expressed itself as being deeply appreciative of the <br /> generosity of the City Council in the pa~t in its attitude toward the schools and it has no <br /> desire, ~u any way, $o ~mba~rass the City Co~.uncil at this time by preferring this r eq~e~t, l~: <br /> feels that such a ~tep ms necessary for the best interest of ~he schools and the school chil- <br /> dren of this City." <br /> <br />The following communications f~;6~, the City ~anager were read: <br /> <br />the <br /> <br />City Engineer, <br />Inclosure - <br /> <br /> 1st ~I am attaching hereto copy o£ a letter which I have forwarded to1 <br />Chief of the Fire Department and-Chief of the Bureau of Fire Prevention. <br /> I believe at this time it is imperative that we take these steps~ <br /> <br /> ~Due to the number of disastrous fires i n hotels throughout ou~ country,! <br />I feel that the City of PortSmOuth should immediately make certain that every precautmon <br />has been taken to protect people who stay in the local hotels. <br /> In your checking, if you find that neither the City nor the State pro-t <br />vide you with adequate laws to protect people, then it is your in~uediate responsibility <br />to make necessary recommendation t o me, a nd I shall i n turn inform the Council. <br /> The f act that one of these major catastrophes has not happened in <br />Portsmouth should not let us assume the attitude that it c~ not.
