Henderson, James N.Howard, <br />~-~ankD. Lawrence, E. Robie Sturteva~t, C.E. Warren,H. Earl ~¥eiseman, <br />Pearls J. Wilson, Arthu~ S. Owens, City Eanager, and R.C. Barclay, <br />City Attorney. <br /> <br />Minutes of regular meeting held February 25th were read and ~oproved. <br /> <br />The privilege of the floor was granted ~. T.Parker, who presented the <br /> <br /> ~We, the ~u~dersigned, owners and opera~ors of taxicabs in this City, <br />respectfully request that the Council reduce the parking fee which i s now ~l~0~00 for each cab <br />operating %u the City to a more reasonable amount. This is requested due to the fact that oU~ <br />revenue from the operation of cabs has been ~ery materially reduced .within the past year which <br />we attribute to a d~inished population in this area. 0~ cost of operation due to inability <br />to secure equipment and other high costs is also a contributing factor in this request. <br /> We also respectfully request that the Cou~cil ~nend the taxi ordi - <br />nance covering ooerators' permits which is now ~10.00 per ~n~ to permit an operator to secure <br />a quarterly lice'~se. This ~equest is z~de upon the grounds that we are continually hiring new <br />men and in ms~y cases t~ c~¥eates ~ hardship for the d~iver to pay this sum at one ti~e, andwe <br />are not asking that this be reduced but merely to be issued upon a qu~cterly basis if the ap - <br />plicant so desires, <br /> <br />Respectih~lly submitted, <br /> <br />Tony Lopinto and numerous others.~ <br /> <br /> · ' C~ty ~uager. <br />On motion, said petmtmon w~s referred to the ~ <br /> <br />The following letter v~s read: <br /> <br /> "In regard to the complaints about coal dust from our coal y~d, <br />please be advised that we are making every effort to remedy tkis situation. ~e a~e instructing <br />our shippers to ship us only oil or chemicslly t reared coal at an additional cost of l0 cents <br />per ton to us. <br /> ~e e~ect to have erected an 8 ft. board fenne adjacent to the line <br />of houses along our western boundary line. ~e will also experiment with a covered chut~ to our <br />co~lu~loade~. <br /> Trusting these measures ~ll eliminate ~ny future trouble, w e <br /> <br />Tou~s very t~u!y, <br /> <br />Jord~u E. Units no longer needed for residential use ~exs~_der Park <br /> being sold educational institutions, local public bodies and properly sport - <br /> acted non-profit corporations to provide housing exclusively Veterans ~orld <br />War II and servicemen. ~on-profit corporation undertaking such a program must <br /> have official endorsement local governing body for area in ~,~ich houses ~lll <br /> be relocated, in Portsmouth area this endorsement necessary from both City <br /> ~ud Co~ty ~o release specifically FPHA from_ ezisting agreement <br /> <br /> A R Hanson Federal Public Housing <br /> Authority.~ <br /> <br />Resolution - <br /> ~¢~ereas, material sh~ rages and skyrocketing prices of materials available <br /> has practically precluded the possibility of many ,wa~ veterans building or <br /> buying homes, and <br /> ¥~zereas, compact demountabte housing u~ts are available for purchase by <br /> war veterans at Alex~ader Park at reasonable prices, and <br /> ~hereas, ~ar Veterans desiring to ou~¢~se these houses ~ud locate them in <br /> the City of Portsmouth are prohibited fro~ doing so unless the City Council <br /> advises the Federal Public Housing Authority that it does not object to <br /> erection of su~n Houses in the City, ~d <br /> ~ereas, Norfolk City a~ Norfolk County have adopted resolutions granting <br /> veterens the right to purchase and locate the surplus Alexander Park houses <br /> <br /> <br />
