<br />Government for these schools at the-present time, and he feels further that o~ acceptance of

<br /> 6th - "I am inclosing a letter from the Supe~iutendent of Schools,
<br />asking for authority to pure.base chains, desks, books ~ud other school equipment from the Nor-
<br />folk County School Boar~, in the ~mount of $~,701.90. This equipment was taken over by the
<br />'City hy annexation.
<br /> i therefore request that an appropriati~a o£ ~,?01~90 be made

<br />tazned zn these schools. I may add that ~he price to be paid for the library books, free text-!
<br />book~, and audio visual aids was based on the recommendation ef the State ~u~erintendent of
<br />Publzc Instz~ction, as a part of the purchase price of these materials was i~rni~hed by
<br />State Board of Education a nd the local community. The price agreed upon was approved by the
<br />School Board at its meeting on F~iday ~ight, June 4th, and is submitted to you with the r ecom-
<br />mendation that it be paid, and the material purghased for ~he respective schools.
<br /> I wish also to state that I was authorized by ~r'. Barclay, acting
<br />City ~uager, to r each an agreement with the Norfolk County School' Board for the purchase of
<br />these materials. While I am attaching the list of furniture and teaching materials, in detail

<br /> ~lst - "The United States acquired by an Order of Taking a parcel o£
<br />land about one-half acre in size at the west end of Hartford Street, being a pa~t of the Glen-
<br />sheallah golf property. The stun of $1.00 was deposited in court for theland and I understand
<br />the land is t o be conveyed to the Hampton Roads Sanitation Commission. Should the proper~ty b e
<br />conveyed by the Cityat the price paid by the Commissidn to the Goverr~nant, the stun of $1.00
<br />should be accepted but there is an uncertainty as what the commission will do i n this pa~ticu~
<br />lar.
<br /> I have attempted to have the c~se continued until an agreement
<br />c~u be reached with the Commission, but the United States Judge re£used to continue the case,
<br />and it is nBcessary either to go to t rial or to reach a figure for settlement.
<br /> The property was appraised at $350.00 snd we can secure tills
<br />amount either by going to t rial or a s I believe by a stipulation.
<br /> I believe the City should contend for the appraised value of
<br />the p~opertyand settle with the Commission at a later date if I am unable to cor~ inue the
