Guy Ancell, City i~ager. <br /> <br /> Minutes of regular meeting held June 22nd, 19AS and called meeting <br />of June 26th were read and approved. <br /> <br /> The question of making Glasgow Street a one-way street, from Craw- <br />ford Etreet to Effingham Street, traffic going west, was referred to the Zoning C~ission. <br /> <br /> The Committee appointed to consider the request of the Portsmouth <br />Transit Companyf or an increase in fare, reported that the Committee hadp gone a s fa~ as it j <br />could in its study and asked for a conference of the Council. The resident requested that a <br />conference of the City ounomt be called for Frmday, July 16th, at 6,:50 P.~., for said purpose.. <br /> <br />The foliowing~communications from the City Eanager w ere read: <br /> <br /> ~ let - The School Boara, at mrs last meetmng, passed a resolutmon <br />requesting the City Council to make~a specmal appropriatmon of $12,818.00~ to cover three emer <br />gency repair items as follows: <br /> A new heating plant at Briggs School t o <br /> replace the furnace that was beyond repair - $4,051.00 <br /> A new furnace for Prentis Park School to <br /> replace the present furnace that was beyond <br /> repair - <br /> A new boiler for the Truxton School to <br /> place the old one whichw~s beyond repair - <br /> <br />The Eanage~ recon~r~er~ded that $12,818~00 be appropriated for <br /> <br /> ~190o00 <br /> <br />$ <br /> said <br /> <br />pttrpose. <br /> <br /> Motion o f ~. Grimes to place on its first reading an appropria- <br />tion of $1~,818~00, f or said purpose, was adopted. <br /> <br /> 2nd - The ~ganager presented the following letter from the Superin- <br />tendent of Schools: <br /> ~0ne of our colored teachers, ~s. Arde!!a Bailey Bro~rn of 1737 j <br />Florida Avenue retired on .J?~e l~th after thirt.y s.even yea~s of s er??ce in the Portsmouth Pub- <br />lic ~chools,on accoo~t of mll health. I am notmfymng you of her retmrement because it has be - <br />come more or less an established practice of the City Council to grant a gratuity to members <br />of the Portsmouth teaching personnel on their retirement." <br /> <br /> Motion of Grimes to place an approoriation_ of $270.00, for said <br />purpose, on its first reading, was adopted. <br /> <br /> 3rd - "I should like to advise the City Council that the City En- <br />gineer's report shows that we have i~e xcess Of one hundred twenty miles of s econdaz~y streets, <br />which will qualify uuder the new Stat, ~ighway law for ,hich the City of Portsmouth will reeei~ <br />$300.00 pe~ mile per year for maintenance o~ these streets. <br /> This p aymer~ is in a~ddition t o the payment received at <br />present for maintenance of streets in the primly system." <br /> <br />0n motion filed. <br /> <br /> ~th - The ~ager recommended that we grant the Ar~istead-Morrison <br />~uel Company, ~ttl8 ~ Gospo~t Road, the privilege of installing two fuel oil tanks, one of <br />18,000 gal lens c~pacity and one of 1~,800 gal lens eapacity. <br /> <br />~otion of-~r. Houghton to concu~ in the ~ar~ger s reco~endation, <br /> <br />was adopted. <br /> <br /> Sth - .
