5th ~Th~ee of the Deps~vtment heads have petitioned me one everal
occasions to m~d~e ¢~rtsin salary adjustments among thei~ professior~l and skilled people, and
upon investigation, I find that there a~e s~e inequalities in these ranges of salaries, and
! should like permission to ma~e sl'ight adjustments in th~ salaries involving twenty-three
people, ten o f whom are in the Water Department, ten i n the Welfare Department (nc~e of whom
received any'bonus), and tbwee in the ~ngineering Department.
-- The total amount to msXe this adjustment for the remaining
five months in this fiscal yea~, will be* ,~2,635.00, of which $630°00 will be paid by the State
of Virginia, leaving a total appropriation by the City Coumc il of ~.2,005o00.
~e have the resignation of one of on~ experienced pump men
from the Water Department now, du.e to inadequate salary, and we expedt more to follow if some
adjustments are not made. It .is impossible toreplace these people at the salaries we are pay-I
ing for such services, and it zs my hope that we can keep the trained personnel in the posi -
tions which require training, rather than s peril time and money in t raining new people.
I shall ~ppreciate ynu~ appropriating this fund, in order to
make these salary adjustments for twenty-three City employees,a
