~nd - "The Portsmouth Junior Chamber of Commerce is very much in-
terested in installing in Portsmouth several h~udred ~gum ball machines~. Profits from these
machines will, it is proposed, be used to further the Junior Chamber's program of youthwelfar~
However, we find that the present tax upon such vending machines is prohibitive.
These machines, serviced by the Ford G~n and ~ia~hine Com-
pany, whose reputation we have thoroughly investigated, are in use now by some 600-odd Ki,a~nis
ClUbs, 500 and some Eions Clubsand many other civic and's ervice clubs t~hroughout the country.
In Virginia, Junior Chambers of Commerce have ~_ndertaken this program on a s tatewide basis.
I~ numerous cases the high license taxes have been substantially reduced, in others waived
co~vplet ely.
We ask that, here in Portsmouth, we be permitted to install
these gum mac?~ines upon the payment of atax of fifty cents (50~) per n~.chine.
