Price and Mr. Ealouin spoke. 2 <br /> <br /> Motion of ~. ~wa~ren to ov~rLri~e ~he Zoning Commzs~ion~s recommenda. <br />said lot for sale, was adopted, ~aud by the following vote: <br /> <br />Nays- ' <br /> <br />Fox, Bilisoly, Gri~es, Henderson~Howard, <br /> Warren, W-eiseman, ~i!son <br />Duke <br /> <br />Sturtevant, <br /> <br />lng held on March 10th, <br /> <br />The following letter wa_s read and ordered acknowledged and fzled. <br /> <br /> ~The Board of Directors of the Rotary Cl~o of Portsmouth at a meet- <br />approved ~manimously the following resolution: <br /> <br />'Resolved, ~mat the Rotary Club of Portsmouth, Virginia, <br />goes on record and is in complete accord wi~h a long <br />range pro,am for the expansibn and~the ~hysical improve- <br />ment of the Public School system of the Czty of Portsmouth <br />end commends the School Board for its untiring efforts to <br />provide for the children o f Portsmouth a school system o f <br />which we, as citizens of Portsmouth, can be justly proud." <br /> <br /> The following letter was read and, on motion of Mr. Howard, refer- <br />red to the City Manager: <br /> <br /> "At a meeting of the Lee ~ard Civic Club, the matter of street <br />lighting in Lee Ward was one of the subjects of business, very much criticism was brought for- <br /> <br /> We know that a st~rvey w2s made of this matter some time ago a nd <br />new lights and larger bulbs, designated for several points in this ward. We also know that ~he <br />Electric Light Company claim shortage of material. ~hat we would like to know why they c an <br />noz do some of the work on this authorization in thi2 ward as well as in the new ahnexed ter- <br />ritory. <br /> We ask you honorable bodie~ co-operation in t~ying to g et the sit- <br />uations straightened out in this Ward as there are several very dark and dangerous streets <br />which should be attended to, as soon as possible. <br /> Yours very truly, <br /> <br />Lee Ward Civic Club <br /> <br />E C iqnoderer, Recording Secretary." <br /> <br /> Bill of J. G. ~cCoy, in the amount of $10.00, for chickens de- <br />stroyed by dogs, was presented. <br /> <br /> Motion of ~. ~arren t o ask the Treasurer to pay the same from <br />funds in her hands from collection of @og Taxes, was adopted. <br /> <br />following letter was read: <br /> <br /> "This organization leased the Armory from t he City o f Portsmouth <br />on the 15th day of March, 1949, at which time the officials dealt with were told that the <br />mory was to be used to give a Bingo game f~ the benefit of the Cancer Fund. A deposit of <br />$25.00 was made per instructions. The initial arrangements were made with the city at least <br />~hirty days prior to the date the Armory was to be used. During that period we went to con - <br />Siderable trouble making arrangements. <br /> On the day the game was to be he!d, we were notified two and one <br />half hours before gs~e time that we could no~ hold the Bingo game. Not considering o-~ incon- <br />venience and embarrassment, we feel that~ the City should refund our $25.00 and also pay the <br />expenses we were put to in making our arrangements.
