~Por several years, various individuals and organizations have been
trying-ye get the City to employ the use of an azabu!smce for persons suffering from sickness cz
injury, but all to no avail. Various excuses b~ve beem offered, mainly finance.
Gentlemen, the time has come ~aen some action should be taken to pro-
vide this much needed public s erviceo We are surprised that soY~ething has not been done befor~
in view of the publicity and criticism ~lhich has been heaped upon this lac~o f service for so
long a time. For the sake of ho~aity, we do not see how we cam live with our conscience if we
contin?s~e to let this matter go .ta~_attended.
At the~meeting of Lee Ward Civic Club on ~ay 9th, 1949, we went on re-
cord'as hear~i!y endorsing the proposal advocated by the ~mericsm Legion regarding this situa-
tion. Portsmouth is growing and our improvements should grow with it. This is noz only mn ~
provement but a vital necessity~ It is a deplorable situationw hen a person in dire pain,s~-
feting agony, has to lie in wait for an ~ndeterminate length of time awaiting ~ansportation
to some place where their miseries can b e lessened and_ be puv in'a comfortable stats of mind.
We do not feel thst t~his is asking too much, in fact very little~ ~ne life saved would pap- for
the service forever, not in money, but in gratitude from a grateful public, the ones who depend
on
We hooe and feel that you will give this yottr immediate attention as
it is not a plea for you ye spend money, but a plea for the care and protection o f hume~ity.
