"In sonfi~nationof the visit to you~ office by N~.-L.M. Daly and my-
Self of Chestnut Farms Dairy, Washington, D. C., on Tuesd~, Mswch 15, 1949, regswding the
procurement of a pe~nit f~om the City of Portsmouth, Va., pezm~itting the distributiono f Chest·
nut Farms Sealtest Daiz~ Products in your City, I wish t o give you the following infoz~nation:
It is the desire of Chestnut Fazes Dai~y t o establish in Portsmouth,
Va., a distributingplant from which our dairy products could be distributed to both wholesale
stops and to private homes.
i~e products would be packaged ready for delivery in our Washington
dairya nd shipped by fast refrigerated truck to the distributing plant located in Portsmouth.
Shipments would be made from Washington each afternoon and the deliveries made in Portsmouth
the'following morning would be the same milk Which w as being delivered in ~ashington the same
day.
It is our understanding that you ha~e an ordinance which s tares that
~ilk must be pasteurized and packaged in a plant located within a "reasonable distanee~ of Po~t
mouth in order that your Health Department could p rgperly supervise both the dai~y fa~ns and
the dai~y itself.
The City of Washington, D.C~ has a code of regulations unde~ whichw e
operate and in addition to including all requirements of the U,S. Public Health Sez~eio~.f~-~as_
several safeg~.ards not reqdired by these regulations such as mechanical refrigeration and steam
sterilization on the farms.
All milk processed in the dairy is procured from fa~ns located within
the Washington milk shed which is composed of fazes in Maryland and Virginia and all o f these
fa~ns are under the direct supe~visi0n of the washington Health Department a s well as techni-
cians from our~ Sealtest labo~atorles,
~e feel that we could make available tO yo~ citizens a superior line
of dairy products by procuring the raw products from the WashingtonM ilk Shed and processtn~
here ready for delivery to the consumer than we could de by building a processing plant in
your City and buying the raw products locally.
We have at the presen? time a reciprocal a.g~eem~nt with.th? joint
Health Depswtments of the City of Gha~l~ttesville~ Va., and the Unmversity of V~rg~nia, whereb~
they accept the'supervision of the Washzngton Health Department over ou~ d~i~y and the farms |
we procure from.
The above arrangement has proven satisfactory and in addltion to ship-
ping our products to Chs~lottesville, we cover~Winchester and Ltway and practically all towns
and cities between those points and Washington, in addition to most Virginia towm_s on the
Eastern Shore as far south as Cape Charles.
