move made by our Transit Company.
I have called several of you on the phone about this move, however,
some of you I could not reach.
The Portsmouth Transit Company has raised their fares to ten cents of
which I think everyone agreed, as we don~t want anyone to operate in the red, and for this
they have promised us new buses, fa~ more thanwe have, and a guarsmtee of a good schedule
the public.
They have cut most all transfer points under a ruse of some people
back hauling on them, yet i personally have seen the drivers forced to make the aged pay ano-
ther fare or walk two squares in th~ rain to another so-called transfer point, which to my un-
derstanding is positive ridiculous. They will not d? one iota to prevent smoking on the buses,
yet th~ey will force you to stand behind ~the white ~l~ne, and I may say that sm.okir~ is still
growing on the buses more and more each day, as I nave seen not only the publzc, but the po
lice as well, and some of the drivers encourage it by doing it themselves.
Last Thursday, Z was told that ~o Steele, their schec~le man, is tak-
ing off three or four more ~uns, namelyt one off Park View, one off 0~egon G~rdens, and one
off the Craddock line and I think there is another one.
Now, my friends, one of the NorfolkCouncilmen' told this same company
if they ~could not keep up their schedule then pack up and get out, and i think iS i~ high time
we should te~l them the ss~me thing. Are you gentlemen going to ps,nit them to cut these lines
like this, and let the public keep on paying t~-~ough the nose?
I thi~k it is time to call a halt on their tactics.
