Commission, resources and information Which I have accumulated in the past four <br />years from personal visits to 14 children's museums across the United States to be <br />used at their discretion, and spend my energies to help their leadership bring the <br />Children's Museum of Virginia to become the best asset possible for the citizens of <br />Portsmouth and the Commonwealth of Virginia. <br /> <br />Thanks again for your understanding." <br /> Cameron C. Pitts, City Councilman <br /> <br /> Motion by Mr. Robinett, and seconded by Mr. Martin, to adopt the following <br />resolution, and was adopted by the following vote: <br /> <br /> "A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CiTY OF <br />PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA, ACCEPTING THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE <br />MUSEUM AND FINE ARTS COMMISSION ON THE LAYOUT AND EXHIBITS FOR <br />PHASE II OF THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF VIRGINIA. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Children's Museum of Virginia for many years has been a <br />center for learning and excitement for children and has attracted school children and <br />families from this region and beyond; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Children's Museum of Virginia began a new era in December <br />1994 with new exhibits and amenities in the former Leggett's building on High Street <br />and has enhanced its role as a center for children and families, as well as serving as <br />a community meeting place; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the opening of the new facilities in 1994 was conducted as Phase <br />I, with the understanding that the second floor of the building would be utilized for <br />Phase II in the future and with architectural design including an atrium and other <br />amenities for Phase I1; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Lancaster antique toy and train collection has been <br />generously donated for use and display in Phase II of the Children s Museum of <br />Virginia; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of PortSmouth directed the Museum <br />and Fine Arts Commission, a body appointed by the City Council, to develop a <br />pro6ess for the layout and design of Phase II of the Children's Museum of Virginia; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Museum and Fine Arts Commission has used the services of <br />a design consultant, an ad hoc committee of interested and qualified citizens, and <br />several out-of-town consultants qualified to advise the City of Portsmouth on the <br />development of Phase II of the Children's Museum of Virginia; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Museum and Fine Arts Commission has completed its <br />process and has unanimously adopted the recommendation of its design consultant <br />and ad hoc committee, and has presented its recommendation to the City Council as <br />a means of enhancing the role of the Children's Museum of Virginia as a center of <br />learning and excitement. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Portsmouth, Virginia, that the Council accepts the recommendation of the Museum <br />and Fine Arts Commission for the layout and design of Phase II of the Children's <br />Museum of Virginia and commends the Commission for its diligence in carrying out <br />this assignment. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Portsmouth, <br />Virginia, authorizes the Commission, the City Manager and others as appropriate to <br />proceed as planned with the completion of Phase II of the Children's Museum of <br />Virginia." <br /> <br />Ayes: Berm, Clemons, Griffin, Martin, Robinett, Holley <br />Nays: Pitts <br /> <br /> <br />
