The Mayor presented the followinE letter:

The Board of Directors of ttae Ports~uth Cb~mber of Commerce, at its
regular monthly meeting on F~iday, November 18th, considered the case of the Commonwealth
Broadcasting Corporation (Station wL0~), which through its representatives has made applica-
tion to install a radio station and studio at the North end of Middle St. in the City o f
Portsmouzh. This property i ~ presently zoned for multiple-family dwelling dzszr_ct,
and a ~equest to the Planning and Zoning Commission to rezone it for commercial purposes was
denied, with the reservation, however, that the Planning and Zoning Commission would not ob
ject i~ the City Council saw fit to amend its zoning ordinauce to hermit radio stations and
studios to be erected in such areas that had been zoned for multiple family dwelling purposes]
The Co~mmittee on Industrial Development looked into this and found that
~0W desired to locate in Portsmouth, that they would spend around ~1~5,000. for development,
ah ...... umd bri~ 18 e~,~lo~rees to Portsmouth and a payroll~of $60,000.00 a year, and ~at thei~
~h~' for ~pplie~ e%c. would certainly ~mo~.t to another $100,000.00:~ In+additzon there
to- if and when this station should go znto t&levzsion, they~would be requ~ed ~o spend at
least ~200,000.00 more. It was felt by the Industrial Committee that this was an industry that
Portsmouth could ill afford to lose, and so they recommended to the Board of Directors that
the Council be requested to amend its ordinsmce to permit this company t o locate on this site
~ae Chamber Directorate's unanimous action was one of supporting the
station's proposal, at the same time protecting the interests of property owners iht he af -
letted section.
it is therefore respectfully requested that you request the C~ y At -
torney to prepare an ordinance permitting the establisbm~ent of radio stations and studios in
districts zoned such as this one, without opening them to other co~m~erczal development.

Respectfully submitted,

Sol Fass, President."
