We feel that amy attempt
to continue the golf course would bring new holes too close to John Tyler thereby jeopardizin
the safety of our children and take away much needed space from our playground.
As future patrons of the high school, we are interested in
the placement of the building ~ud we feel too much is at stake to let the golf co~trse (which
we feel is temporary)-interfere with the locatioh.
John Tyler P~A has a membership of 5~1 (250 men and 281
women - all residents of John Tyler Ward.
Sincerely,

Mrs. RoC~ Coleman~ PreLsident~
John Tyler ?.T.Ai"

2nd awe would like to bring toyo~r-attention the fact that our com-
mittee, representing the Port-Norfolk-Pinners Point Parent Teachers Association is vitally
interested in the problem before the Joi~t meeting of ~he Portsmouth City Co~acil and the City
School Board tonight; namely, the site for the new white high school
~4e feel the chosen site should begf~ at a point no farther
back than Locust St. extended~ so that the building itself may be ~as far removed from the rail
road as is feasible ~ keeping in mind the welfare and safety~ of the children. We also ~el that
it would be most unfortunate to sacrifice adequate school grounds and the most desirable loca-
tion of the school for retaining the golf course, which we have been t~Id b~ those qualified
to know, will not be satisfactory when revamped.
We sincerely hope and believe that you will keep in m~Rd in
yo~r deliberations the best interest an~ welfare of e~r childre~ the fa$~re citizens of
Portsmouth, who w~!l attend this high school for years to come.
Thanking you for your kind attention to our feeling~ in the
matter~ we are Very sincerely,

Mrs. R.B. ~ayland, Jr. and others."

~rd - ~The Inter-Club Co~uci~, a non-partisan organization, ¢~m -
pos?d o~ representatives of the cities major civic elu~s, are conoer~ed about your final de -
cision in .t~e location of the proposed new white high school in Portsmouth.
~e realize that the City Council~d the School Board have
studies every possible site and will try to make a selection that will be te the best inter-
ests of the entire community.
Under the ciremmstan?es,.bear in mind that Portsmouth, Vir-
ginia has woefully inadequate recreational and parkfacili~les~ when compared to those in
other progressive cities of similar size. ~ertsmouth has one acre of park land to 500 popu-
lation, instead of the generally accepted, standard of one acre for ever~ 100 population. This
factor should be considered when you contemplate the use of City ~rk lan~ for a ~choo! site.
The Inter-Club Councils objective i s toBuild a Better Com-
m~uity and therefore we request that the Council investigate the possibility of removing
blighted, slttm areas in the central part of the 9i~y, and~r~l$cat~ th~.~!ie~,inother areas
temporar~ly~ until the authorize~ housing pro~ee~ ~s eomp±e~e~, we a±l~uow ~nere are maz4v
such areas and with Federal fi~cial assistance~ the ~ity has much to gain by tsk~§ action
in this direction now. If this is not feasible at present, and yo~ find it necessary to lo-
cate the school on city park land, we sincerely urge you to replace an equal amottut of park
area in other ~ctions of the City where space is available. It is the desire of the Inter-
Clmb Council to co-operatewith city officials and persoRnel at all times. Won't!you show us
hy your decision that we can look for the same co-operation from you and your associates in
return? Sincerely,
Inter-Club Co~ucil,
L~on Cardon, Chairman?

Motion of Mr. Houghton that the City Manager investigate the openin~
of Washington Avenue from Wyoming Street to ~lexande~s Corner, ~s requested by Mr. Ho~ghton
in 19~9 was adopted.
Motion of Mr. Houghton that theCity Manager investigate violations
of the Zoning Ordinance where horse stables are located at Alexander's Corner, was adopted.
