May qth. 19~0, <br /> <br /> An appropriation of $621.60 for Portsmouth, s share in the Chesapeake <br />and Potomac Telephone Company rate case appeal, placed on its first reading at last meeting~ <br />was taken up. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Houghton to appropriate $621.60 for said purpose~ was <br />adopted~ and by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Bilisoly, Grimes~ Henderson~ Houghton~ Howard~ <br /> Sturtevant, Warren, Weiseman, Wilson <br />Nays: None <br /> <br /> An additional appropriation of $1~500.00 for re-location of -~ires locat- <br />ed on proposed new colored high school site~ placed on its first reading at last meeting~ was <br />taken up. <br /> Motion of Mr. Howard to appropriate $1~500.O0 for said purpose, was <br />adopted and by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: <br /> <br />Nays: <br /> <br />Bilisoly~ Grimes~ Henderson~ Houghton~ Howard~ <br />Sturtevant~ Warren~ ~Teiseman, Wilson <br />None <br /> <br /> ~n appropriation of $250.00 for purchase of a lot in block ~6, plat of <br />Prentis Park~ from Dr. F.S. Nolan, was taken up_. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Grimes to appropriate $250.00 for said purpose was adopted <br />and by the following vote: <br /> <br />Ayes: Bilisoly, Grimes~ Henderson, Houghton, Howard~ <br /> Sturtevant~ PYarren~ Weiseman~ ~ilson <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />- NEW BUSINESS <br /> <br /> At the request of the Housing Authority the Mayor appointed Messrs. <br />Sturtevant~ Bilisoly~ Duke and Howard on a committee to work with thePortsmouth Redevelopment <br />and Housing Authority on the approach to the tunnel. <br /> <br />ceived and filed. <br /> <br />The report of the City Clerk and Auditor for the month Of April was re- <br />The following letter from the River Park Civic Club was read: <br /> <br /> ~The membership of the River Park Civic Club .wishes to express their <br />opposition to the recent rate increase by the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company. <br /> We are not in a position to Wnow anything about the cost of operating <br />the telephone system~ but we feel that that the rates we are now paying are unreasonably high. <br />It seems there is no limit to the price people are going to be charged for this service. <br /> In view of the above, we request the support of the Council in o~r ef - <br />forts to obtain cheaper rates for our telephone service. <br /> Thanking you for your co-operation~ I remain~ <br /> Yours truly, <br /> <br />J. D. Powel!~ Corresponding Secretary <br />River Park Civic Club." <br /> <br />adopted. <br /> <br />Mo~ion of Mr. Howard that the City Clerk answer the letter~ was <br /> <br />read: <br /> <br />The following letter from the Military Order of the Purple Hear~s~ was <br /> <br />War ~2, was read: <br /> <br /> "We urgently request permission to display in your city one~ and possi- <br />bly two~ of our touring exhibits at different periods of time during the ensuing year. <br /> The purpose is to raise funds for the various programs of the Military <br />Order of the Purple Heart~ which, as you probably know~ is the natmona_ organization compo~d <br />wholly of combat wounded veterans. <br /> The exhibit is housed ina'28 ft. mobile trailer unit. Admission is free, <br />contributions are permitted. <br /> We would be most grateful to you for your co-operation and are hopeful <br />that you grant this permission whieh will aid our various programs considerably. <br /> Upon receipt of your authority~ exact dates will be forwardedto your <br />office. <br /> Thank yon for your consideration. <br /> Irving W. Parker~ Representative." <br /> ~Motion of Mr. Weiseman to refer to the City Manager~was adopted. <br /> <br /> The following letter from Virginia Post #16, American Veterans of W~d <br /> <br /> "Virginia Post ~16 of the ~eric~u Veterans of World War II, located <br />inBarlOw Place~ is strongly opposed to the transfer of said project to the Portsmouth Re- <br />development and Housing Authority for a low rent housing project. We would like to have an <br />audience at a City Council meeting and ask that yon give ~s an appointment at the earliest <br />possible date." <br /> <br /> <br />
