Warren~ Weiseman~ Wilson <br />Nays: None <br /> <br />Smith~ Sturtevant~ <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Weisemau that the Clerk cast a unanimous vote for Mr. <br />Wilson for Vice President of the Council was adopted. <br /> <br />Mr. Wilson made the followir~ remarks: <br /> <br /> "I want to thank you for the high honor that you have conferred upon <br />me tonight~bel_eve with age honors are more greatly appreciated. With years a richer life <br />begins - the spirit mellows - ripe age gives tone to violins~ wines and good fellows. <br /> Last week I read in the ~'Pathfinder" about an old man seventy-two <br />years old who had been ~ntenced to the electric chair for murder. He mid ~'It's all right with <br />me - men of my age have nothing to lookforward to exceot a rocking chair and a newspaper. <br />I disagree with him if age is his handicao - I have reached that age and am looking ~orward <br />to m~uy things other than a rocking chair~and a newspaper. Because life is sweet~ not because <br />of the friends we have made nor the things which in common we share. We want to live on~ not <br />because of. ourselves~ but because of the people who care. It's giving and doing for somebody <br />else~ on ~hat all life's solendor depends~ but the joy of this world~ben you sum~ all up - <br />is found~e making cf friends. · <br /> <br /> In accepting this offic% I am mindful of the fact that there are <br />many duties and responsibilities attached theret% but with the same wholehearted co-operation <br />which you have given me and others during the pa st fourteen years~ I feel sure that I will be <br />able to fill this office with honor to the City and credit to myself.~' <br /> <br />approved. <br /> <br />Minutes of the regular meeting held August 27th~ 19gO were read and <br /> <br /> The following letters from the City Manager were read: <br /> <br /> let - "I am attaching a list of amounts of fees due attorneys for <br />collecting delinquent taxes and recommending that an appropriation of $2~261.03 fom~payment of <br />said fees be placed on its first reading tonight." <br /> <br /> Motion o f Mr. Houghton to Place an appropriation of $2:261,03 for <br />said purpose on its first mading~ was adopted. <br /> 2n~- "Attached is a contract with the United States Government and <br />the City of Portsmouth for treatment of sewage at the Enlisted Men's Barracks~ George Washing- <br />ton Highway and Pine Street~ Portsmouth. I recommend that the City Manager be authorized to <br />execute the contract." <br /> <br /> ~ Motion of ¥~. Yei~eman that the City Manager be authorized to execute <br />the contract~ was adopted. <br /> <br /> 3rd - "I am submitting herewith a~'deed of dedication and agreement <br />covering proposed railroad crossing at Hartford St.~ and reco~end that the City Manager be au- <br />thorized to axecute the cohtract in lieu of the Mayor~ due to his illness." <br /> <br /> Motion cfP~. Howard that the City Manager be authorized to sign the <br />deed~ was adopted. <br /> <br /> Motion of Mr. Howard that the City ~nager be instructed to ~ite the <br />Atlantic Coast Line Railroad that if there are to be any delays in the construction of the new <br /> <br /> <br />
