238

December 12th. 1970.

the following: We wish t vigorously protest the service being rendered the people of our
City by the Portsmouth Transit Company. At the public hearing held by your honorable body~
more than a month ago, on the problem of increasing bus fares, we suggested better service wi~
more buses in daily operation to overcome the crowded conditions that were prevalent at that
time. From close observation ~nd experience by many of our members and from a cauvass of raol
and file citizens during this past month, the ~plorable fact is that the Transit Company has
not improved the ~rvice but have allowed their service to the people in o~ fine city to be-
come a topic on the street corners as a joke.
The crowded condition has become acute ~nad the ~ay the buses are
packed and jammed during all rush oeriods, including late at night to the Navy Yard, is a dan-
ger that must be realized by ~2l concerned before something tragic happens that will plunge
our fine city into grief at Christmas time when joy should prevail.
We respectfully petition our Honorable City Council:
~nd we most sincerely urge that you act at once~ to imorove the service rendered by the Ports-
mouth Transit Comoany, by insisting that more buses be~placed in daily operation and that Su
oervisors be plsced in the do.~town area during alt rush oeriods to see that the buses are not
~vercrowded beyond their safe limits of capacity and that the Supervisors remain on duty until
the lsrge crowds, both military and civilian~ to the Navy Yard late at night~ are safely hah
dled.
We ~sh to cite that at the public hearing on bus problems~ the of
ficials of the Transit Comoany stated that there were ample buses in their garage for all of
Portsmouth's needs and no ~eport was made of m~n power shortage of drivers. We therefore can
find no r~ason for such ~eplorable service that has become a hazard and a menace to the wel-
fare of our people.

Respectfully submitted,

Portsmouth Central Labor Union."

pany to place additional
was read:

Mbtion Of Mr. Howard that
buses in service during the

The following letter from

the City Manager request the Transit Com-
Christmas rush~ was adopted.

the Norfolk-Portsmouth Bar Association

"Inclosed please find a copy of the reoort of the Committee on Court~
of Justice of the Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association, which ~eport was approved by that
Association at its meeting of October 9th, 1950.
The second paragraph of the reoort recomnaends a petition to your
Council requesting that theCircuit Court room of the Cit~ of Portsmouth be air-conditioned.
It is hoped that the air-conditioning can'be put in before the
warm weather of 19~l arrives.
Respectfully,

A.0.
