<br /> Motion of Mr. Houghton that the~ City Council request the Virginia Electric mad Power
<br />Company to allow the Bi-Centennial Ce~mittee use of its poles on High $~reet, from Water Street to Chestnut
<br />Street, for the purpose of placing bu~ting and banners during the Bi-Centennial celebration, and that the ordi-
<br />nance prohibiting the placing of banners across the streets be suspended during this period, was adopted.

<br /> m~hen I applied for a license for ~ automobile on yesterday, I was required to pay
<br />personal taxes assessed against William H. Ames, Jr., at 203 Sixth Avenue for the years 19&6 and 19~?, amounting
<br />to $5.22 for 19~6 and $~.99 for 19~?. I never lived at 203½ Sixth Avenue and the assessment made against me at
<br /> that address was erroneous. I was assessed for the same years and for other years at 201 Sixth Avenue, where I
<br />reside~ and I paid the taxes for that address.
<br /> I respectfully request that I be ref~uded the su~ of $10.21 erroneously assessed
<br /> against me for the above years. I was required to pay the taxes before they would give me a license."

<br /> the abo~e two years, and he should be refunded the amount as ree~ested. Mr. Turlington, Commissioner of Revenue

<br /> The following letter from the Redeemer Lutheran Church was read:

<br /> "Redeemer Lutheran Church, Airline Boulevard and Greenway Drive, Portsmouth, respect-
<br />fully requests cancellation of the inclosed tax bill.
<br /> This property was brought to be used exotusivelyfer church purposes end has been so
<br />used since the date of p~urchase.
<br /> Instructions were given to our officers to have the deed recorded. The deed was, how-
<br />ever, inadvertently mislaid, and recording of the deed forgotten. Finally, upon request of tax bills, a search
<br />was made of the court records, and it was discovered that the deed had not been recorded. The deed was found af-
<br />ter a further search and recorded ~mmediately. ~ouldit be possible for you to cancel these taxes in view of the
<br />foregoing facts?"
<br /> Motion of Nr. Houghton that taxes be relieved and that the Commissioner of Revenue
<br /> from his books, w~s adopted.

<br />has served the City of Portsmouth as a Councilman, representing
<br />Lee ~ard, for twelve years, and
<br /> WHEREAS, during his ~enure of office, Mr. Weiseman has showm
<br />a disposition to be williug to hear his part of the public burden,
<br />consideriug his responsibility · a trust, and striving to live up
<br />to the oblibations imposed upon Him as a representative of his
<br />people, and
<br />'~J~, after his faithful service to the City, Er. Weiseman
<br />will retire from his position as a Councilman on the last day of
<br />this month, August, 1952,
