<br /> Motion of Mr. Smith to lay on the table was adopted.

<br /> The following letter from the City Attormey was read:
<br />
<br /> "In connection with'the~question o£ calling an election to have the qualified voters of the
<br />City to p~ss upon the question as to whether day-light-saving time should be observed during thelsummer months, I
<br />ca~not find any way in.which the Council can call an official election. The Council can by resolution request the
<br />Electoral Board to hold an unofficial election at the @rimary election ~o be held in April. If this should be
<br />done, i~ill be necessary to provide a separate ballot box at each .pel!ingplace.
<br /> The only way that the matter could he presented to the qualified voters.in an official way
<br />would be under Chapter 10.o£ the City Charter, whereby eithsrA~ ordinance is recommended to the City. Council by a
<br />petition of the electors of the City, or an ordinance is passed'by the ~ity Couneil and the electors file a peti-
<br />tion requesting its repeal. At least twenty per cent of the electors vo~ing for Governora~ the last gubernatoria
<br />election must sign the petition~"

<br /> Motion of Mr. Howard ~o refer back ~o the Cit~ Attorney to £ind.if the City can use the poll

<br /> The following bill from William C. MacDonald for chickens destroyed by dogs, was presented:

<br /> Motion of Mr. Houghton that the City Treasurer be authorized to pay said bill ~rom funds in ~
<br />her hands from collection ofDogTaxes, w~s adopted.

<br /> The following ~etter £romMrs. Edna Host was read:

<br /> "Mr. William Chester Host, who was a member of the Fire Department, died on January. Ath,1953.
<br />I reqnestthat I be pa~d the amount~hich the City refunds~from his retirement deductions."

<br /> Notion.of Mr. Wilson that a refund of $106.32 be granted Mrs. Host, was adopted.

<br /> The following letter from the Superintendent o~ Schools was read:

<br /> "The School Board in regular session, Friday, January 9, 19~3, instructed me to request~the
<br />Council to purchase the followmng unimproved proper~y as shown on the Westhaven map:

<br /> In block 17~ - lots 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18, 17, 1S, l~, 20, 21, 22, 23, 2~.
<br /> In block 52 - lots l, S, ~, 7, 9, ll, 13, 15, 17.
<br /> In block 167 - lots 10,.12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24.

<br /> All of blocks 41 and 166 bounded by Louisa Avenue on the~est, by South Street on the North,
<br />by Nottaway Avenue on the East and Bart Street on the South, with the exception of lots ll, 13 and 15 in block 41.

<br /> The acquisition of the above proper~y is necessary ~o provide adequate playground space for
<br />the Westhaven School.and to.more nearly meet theState requirements. I doubt that the State will give permission
<br />to build the Westhaven Annex unless additional ground is secured. I trust that your body will act favorably upon
<br />~his request at the earliest possible date."

<br /> Motion o£ ~ir. Houghton that the City Manager have a .map made of the lots requested by the Su-
<br />perintendent of Schools and that the Council inspect these lots before taking action~ was adopted~
<br />
<br /> Motion of Mr. Smith that a ~raffic.light be installed at the corner of Leckie and First Ave-
<br />nue, and that the City Manager be authorized to transfer funds from ~he Centingemt Fund to.cover the cost of this
<br />light, was~adopted. ·

<br /> Motionof~Mr. Howard that the Council go into the election of Cemetery trustees, was adopted
<br /> Mr. Howard nominated Mr. Lawrence and ~ir. Stnrtevsa~t.
<br />
<br /> Motion of.Mr. Warren that nominations be closed~ was adopted.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Lawreuce and Mr. Sturtevant were unanimously elected Cemetery Trustees for the years
