Houghton 5o concur in the recommendation of the Planning Commission on the <br />application of W.C. Cross, Jr., was adopted. <br /> <br /> Motion of ~ir. Houghton to co~aur in the recommendation of the Planning Co--lesion on <br />the other ~%tters presented in the letter of the planning Commission, was adopted. <br /> Motion of Mr. Bilisoly to suspend the rules to hear from J. N. ~iaxey,Jr., representing <br />the American Legion, Post #37 was adopted. <br /> <br />Mr. ~L%~ey presented the following resolution: <br /> <br />"B~dEREAS NoYember llth, 1918 brought re a close a victorious s~ruggle for <br />the cause of Democracy, in which a great number of the citizens of our <br />country and our great city lost 5heir lives, and <br /> W~EREAS, the price that was paid to continue our Democratic way of li~e <br />should be revered throughout eternity, and <br /> WHEREAS, this great nation of ours already recognizes this day as a <br />National Holiday, and <br /> WHEREAS, our Commonwealth recognizes this day as a State holiday, <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, by unanimous vote in ~he meeting assembled October 20th, <br />1953, Be it Resolved that Post 37, Department of Virginia, the American <br />Legion, urges the Houorable City Council of the City of Portsmouth Virginia <br />to set aside the llth of November of this year and each succeeding year as a <br />holiday in the City in order that proper respect may be paid to these citi- <br />zens of our city who give their lives to protect our way of life," <br /> <br />Motion of lit. Bilisoly that November llth be declared a holiday, was adopted. <br /> <br /> The following reports from the City Manager were read: <br /> <br /> let - "I submit the attached letter from A.J. Mapp, Superintendent of Schools, and rec- <br />ommend that an appropriation of $250,000.00 from the Utility Tax Fund, be placed on first reading." <br /> <br /> <br />
