<br /> Edward Cox has worked continuously for the City since October, 1930. Prior to this
<br />time he worked for the City az several different times. It is estimated this time would amount to about six
<br />years. He says the first time he worked for the City was in 1900. We have no record of this employment, but ac-
<br />cording to the older heads, I am sure it is true.
<br />
<br /> According to our records, Cox is 79 years old, date of birth Sept. tn, 1874. Employed
<br />by the City October 1, 1930. Last day he was on ~he City payroll was July.31, 1953. He tzas been paid for all
<br />the vacation and sick leave time he is entitled ~o under the City ordinance. His base pay waa$1.0S per hour,
<br />$5t.84 per week for 48 hours or his~nnual pay was ~2,695.68.

<br /> Cox rendered good service to the City; he was faithful, dependable, and a good worker.
<br />His regular duties were cement finishing, form setting, curb setting and general masonry work. In the latter
<br />years, he acted as foreman and has done a very good job. I~espectfully recommend that he be retired with a
<br />pension."

<br /> Motion of Mr. Houghton that 'James E. Cox be retired by the City on the same basis as
<br /> he would have received under the present retirement plan, was adopted.

<br /> - ~111am E. Callis, 414 Queen St., City, an e~ployee in the Department of Public
<br /> Works, has had to quit work on aceount of ill health. It is my understandiug that his family physician has ad-
<br /> vised against his returning to work due to his physical condition.

<br /> According to our records, Mr. Callis is 72 years old,.date of birth May 4th, 1881.
<br />Employed by the City April 4th, 1941. Last day he was on city pay roll was August 18, 1953. Be was paid for
<br />all the vacation leave time and sick leave time he was entitled to under the ordinance. His base ~ay was .95
<br />per hour, $45.60 per week for 48 hours or his annual pay ,was ~2~1~20. Prior ~o his employment with the City he
<br />worked on W.P.A. projects s
<br /> ponsored~by the City for appositely four years. This will make his total years of
<br />employment with the City and W.P.A. approximately sixteen years, Mr. Callis' service was always satisfactory.
<br />He was faithful, dependable and a good worker. His regular duties-had been hand broom sweeping in the Street
<br />Cleaning Division.

<br />unfit for further Work that he be retired with a pension."

<br />by the Department of Highways for the street improvement at Rodman Avenue and Airline Boulevard and also at the
<br />Churchland bridge, western corporate limits of the City.of Portsmouth.

<br /> The Department of Highways has awarded the contract re W.W. W~trsing,Rock-
<br />fish,' Virginia. The city's portion of the contract will be..fifty per cent of the total cost of the projects."
