101 <br /> <br />February 23rd, 1954. <br /> <br />- UNFINISHED BUSINESS - <br /> <br /> An appropriation of $23,000.00 for purchase of-the Telephone Company building on Queen <br />Street, placed on first readiag at last meeting, was taken up. <br /> <br />the following vote: <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Bitisoly to appropriate $23,000.00 for said purpose was adopted, and by <br /> <br /> Ayes: Duke, Bilisoly, Grimes, Houghton, Howard, Lawrence, Smith, <br /> Sturtevant, Wilson <br /> Nays: None. <br /> <br /> - NEW BUSINESS - t <br /> The following letter from the Clerk of the Ferry Board was read: <br /> <br /> 54-64. "At a joint Ferry Board meeting on February 16th, a motion was adopted requesting the Cit~ <br />of Portsmouth to ask the Virginia Electric and Power Company to place the Ferries under the same power rate as the <br />City is paying." <br /> <br /> Motion of ~r. Smith that the City Manager be authorized to contact the Virginia Electric <br />and Power Company to see if the Ferries can not be put on the same rate as the City is3enjoying, was adopted. <br /> <br />54-65 The follgwing letter from the City Attorney was read: <br /> <br /> "In61osed is an ordinance for the closing of certain streets which I was requested to <br />prepare ar your last meeting. I assume that the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority is satisfied with <br />this procedure and does not desire to comply with the provisions of the'State Code, and that the closing of the <br />s~reets does not interfere with a~y water lines, sewers or drai~ge pipes of the City, orthe rights of any utility <br />company." <br /> <br />Motion of Mr. Grimes to place the following ordinance on first reading was adopted: <br /> <br />'~N ORDINANCE TO CLOSE LOVER'S LANE OR-SO~gX STREET, RUTTER STREET, AND PORTIONS <br />OF ARMSTRONG STREET, BART STREET, COLUMBIA STREET, PEARL STREET, PINE STREET AND <br />RICHMOND AVENUE." <br /> <br /> 54-66. Motion of Mr. Smith to refer to the City Manager To consider increasing the salary of <br />the Jury Commissioners from $75.00 to $100.00 in the next annual budget, was adopted. <br /> <br />On motion adjourned. <br /> <br /> <br />
