101 February 23rd, 1954. - UNFINISHED BUSINESS - An appropriation of $23,000.00 for purchase of-the Telephone Company building on Queen Street, placed on first readiag at last meeting, was taken up. the following vote: Motion of Mr. Bitisoly to appropriate $23,000.00 for said purpose was adopted, and by Ayes: Duke, Bilisoly, Grimes, Houghton, Howard, Lawrence, Smith, Sturtevant, Wilson Nays: None. - NEW BUSINESS - t The following letter from the Clerk of the Ferry Board was read: 54-64. "At a joint Ferry Board meeting on February 16th, a motion was adopted requesting the Cit~ of Portsmouth to ask the Virginia Electric and Power Company to place the Ferries under the same power rate as the City is paying." Motion of ~r. Smith that the City Manager be authorized to contact the Virginia Electric and Power Company to see if the Ferries can not be put on the same rate as the City is3enjoying, was adopted. 54-65 The follgwing letter from the City Attorney was read: "In61osed is an ordinance for the closing of certain streets which I was requested to prepare ar your last meeting. I assume that the Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority is satisfied with this procedure and does not desire to comply with the provisions of the'State Code, and that the closing of the s~reets does not interfere with a~y water lines, sewers or drai~ge pipes of the City, orthe rights of any utility company." Motion of Mr. Grimes to place the following ordinance on first reading was adopted: '~N ORDINANCE TO CLOSE LOVER'S LANE OR-SO~gX STREET, RUTTER STREET, AND PORTIONS OF ARMSTRONG STREET, BART STREET, COLUMBIA STREET, PEARL STREET, PINE STREET AND RICHMOND AVENUE." 54-66. Motion of Mr. Smith to refer to the City Manager To consider increasing the salary of the Jury Commissioners from $75.00 to $100.00 in the next annual budget, was adopted. On motion adjourned.
