June 14th, 1955. Streets, in Jackson Ward. We noticed in Sunday's Portsmouth Star that Scott Street is not included in the current program. We, the home owners and taxpayers of the 800 block of Scott Street again ask you to please curb, gutter and pave said block as you promised last year that something would be done at an early date. There is a steady flow o~ traffic through here at all times with no sidewalk other th than that made by the residents. This narrow s~ree~, with plenty of traffic and inadequate sidewalks, creates a hazard for life and limb o£ the residents, especially the children. Nothing has been done, in the way of improvement, in this particular block in the last ten years. During rainy weather, the mudholes are innumerable, and when fair, the dust is unbearable. We are ask- ing you to please include this block i~ the present Street Improvement program. (Signed) John W. Br~wn, and numerous others." Motion of Mr. Howard to refer to the City Manager for investigation was adopted. 55-162 - "At a meeting o~ our Norfolk-Portsmouth Board of Directors, Thursday night, May 19th, I was directed to write a letter of appreciation to you for ex~ending the time limit of the terry operation, in orde~ that a program might be worked out whereby we may have continuous operation o£ the terries, perhaps on a curtailed daytime schedule. Our Association feels that the £erries are so important To the area that every ef£ort should b~ made to continue their operation as a community project. J. T. Timmons, Mauaging Director."
