<br />At a regular meeting of the City Council, held o~-~November 22, 1955, there were

<br />Minutes of regular meeting of the Council on November 8th, 1955 were read and approw~.
<br />The following reports from the City Manager were read:
<br />
<br /> 55-293 - T'I submit a copy of a letter addressed to H. S. Herman, General Manager, Elizabeth
<br />River Tunnel Commission and if it is the pleasure of the Coualcil, I recoEend that they concur in the authoriza-
<br />tion of the Tunnel Commission to use South St. i~ lieu of County Bt. in the trial set up if it is found to be
<br />desirable to do so.

<br /> '%We wish to acknowledge With th~a~lks, your letter of November 18, 1955, authorizing
<br /> the Tunnel buses to continue south on Crawford St. to South St., thence to County St., as an optional route in
<br /> lieu of returning to Cour~ St. via County St.
<br /> At the moment, it would appear that the South Sti ro~te would probably work out
<br />better;therefore we will use South St. when the new route is put into effect.
<br />
<br /> We also wish to thank you for copy of l~r. Howard's motion as adopted by the Ports-
<br />mouth City COnncil on November 8th, 1955, authorizing the change in the TunmeI bas routing.
<br /> The new route will be from the Tu~uel plaza on Washington St. to High; High to Craw-
<br />ford; Crawford to South; South to Court; Court to the Plaza.
<br /> The re-routing of the buses in conformity with the above will begin on Thursday,
<br />November 24th, 1955 at 6:00 A.M., and will continue on a sixty (60) day trial basis. Nr. Thompson, our Executive
<br />Director, agreed with'your Transportation Committee to put this run into effect, with the understanding that
<br />buses now routed, morning and evening, via Seaboard Airline Station on Water St. would be discontinued and that
<br />should the new xam not prove satisfactory, during the trial period, that all buses ~would return to our original
<br />downtown route, i.e., from the Plaza on Washington St. to High; High to Court; Court ~o the Plaza.Wbile this part
<br />of the agreement was not made a part of Mr. Howard's motion, we are calling it to your attention and request that
<br />if there is any doubt asto the understanding, please let us hear from promptly so that any differences may he
<br />straightened out before m~e place tne new rum into operation on No~ember 24th at 6:00 A.M.
<br /> At the time this new bus tau is put into effect, bus stops on the new run will be
<br />located on Washington St. at South; Washington at High; High at Court; CrawTord a~ High;' Cra~Tord at County; Court
<br />at the overpass. All buses will be marked with overhead signs reading 'High and Crawford'.
<br /> Informazion concerning the change of schedule and date, has been given to the news-
<br />papers for pub;icity and the Seaboard Airline Railroad has been notified and a copy of this letter sent to tb~_~."

<br /> Motion of Mr. Howard that the Tunnel Commission be authorized to change the tunnel
<br />bus route from County St. to South St. on a sixty day ~rial basis~ was adopted.
<br />
<br /> 55-294- 'I submit a request from NLrs. Ruth C. Revere and recnmmend that the amount of
<br />$117.8B representing the amount of money paid into the Retirement plan of the Police Department by her late has-
<br />bandEarl H. Revere, he refuuded to her."
<br />
<br />Motion of Mr. Howard that refund be granted was adopted.
<br />
<br /> 55-295 - "I submit the attached resolution concerning War Housing Project VA 44-244 which
<br />has been acquired by the Beazley Foundation and recommend its adoption."
<br />
<br />On motion of I dr. Howard, Athe following resolution was adopted:
<br />
<br />"Be it Resolved by the Council of the City of Portsmouth, Virginia, that on
<br />the basis of local need and acceptability the structures located on proper~y
<br />in War Housing Project VA 44-244 which has been aCquired.by the Beazley
<br />Foundation (for the pua/aose of promoting the $a~$s of charity, religion,
<br />education and recreation) a~e acceptable f6r long-term use and may remain
<br />on-site."
<br />
<br />55-296 - "I 'submit~he attached resolution and recommend its adoption.
<br />
<br /> ~ot~ion of Mr. Grimes to adopt the folIowing resolution and appropriate $200.00
<br />Tor said purpose was adopted, and by the following vote:
<br />
<br />"Be it Resolved by the Council of the City of Portsmouth,
<br />Virginia, tha~ the City of Portsmouth purchase from the
<br />Federal Government for public use the buildings constituting
<br />Defense Houning Project VA ?-D-1 for a consideration of Two
<br />Hundred Dollars ($200.00)."

<br /> Motion of Mr. Hawks that when the buildings are acquired that the City sell them
<br />to the Beazley Foundation for the sum of $200.00, was adopted.
<br />
<br /> 55--297 - "t submit a~tached nettler public hearing having for its purpose the considera-
<br />tion of an:examination ~nd survey of the coastal and tidal areas along the eastern and southern~Seabo~rd of the
<br />United States, which will be held at the Center Theater, in Norfolk at 10:00 A.M., on December 6th, 1955."
<br />
<br /> Motion of ]ir. Bilisoly that Mr. Baker be authorized to represent the City, was
<br />adopted.
